disco_tracy sent in a story about some fancy new power technology
designed to [0]tap energy from sound waves. Although the cell phone
concept grabs the headline, they also talk about harvesting noise from

Julie188 writes "We are inundated with warnings that social media is
systematically [0]stripping away our privacy. But Frank Ahearn, the
so-called 'Dear Abby' of disappearing, is attempting to show folks how to
use those same technologies to regain your privacy, even helping you go
as far as faking your own death. Ahearn is a professional skip-tracer who
has hunted down people like Monica Lewinsky. In an interview with Ahearn
on Network World, he says 'One can [1]legally disappear through the use
of corporations and offshore corporations. The idea is to embrace
technology and to become a virtual entity.' My favorite tip is that New
Zealand is the place to land once you leap off the grid. Not only is it
far from most of the rest of the English speaking world, he says, but it
also has great beaches."

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Barence writes Microsoft will deliver a touchscreen PC that is [0]'no
thicker than a sheet of glass' within the next three years, according to
the company's principal researcher. The device will be the next
generation of Microsoft's Surface project, which currently houses a
touchscreen PC in a deep cabinet that uses cameras to detect hand
gestures and objects placed on the screen. According to Microsoft's Bill
Buxton, 'Surface will become no thicker than a sheet of glass. It's not
going to have any cameras or projectors because the cameras will be
embedded in the device itself.' Microsoft is developing a new screen
technology to make this possible. 'The best way to think about it is like
a big LCD where there's a fourth pixel in every triad. So there's red,
green, and blue pixels giving you light, and [1]a fourth pixel which is a
sensor that will capture stuff,' Buxton claims in an interview with The
Globe and Mail."

An anonymous reader writes "Mozilla has released the first version a
[0]new browser benchmark called Kraken. Mozilla's Robert Sayre writes on
his blog, 'More than Sunspider, V8, and Dromaeo, Kraken focuses on
[1]realistic workloads and forward-looking applications. We believe that
the benchmarks used in Kraken are better in terms of reflecting realistic
workloads for pushing the edge of browser performance forward. These are
the things that people are saying are too slow to do with open web
technologies today, and we want to have benchmarks that reflect progress
against making these near-future apps universally available.' On my
somewhat elderly x86_64 Linux system Google Chrome 6.0.472.55 beta

SpuriousLogic writes with an excerpt from GameSpot: "The US Supreme Court
won't start hearing arguments over California's law banning game sales to
minors until November 2. However, the ruling in the court of popular
opinion is already in, according to a new poll. This week, parent
watchdog group Common Sense Media released the results of a survey it
commissioned on children's access to violent games. Conducted by polling
firm Zogby International, the survey asked 2,100 adults whether they
would support a law that 'prohibits minors from purchasing ultra-violent
or sexually violent video games without parental consent.' Of those
surveyed, some [0]72 percent said they would approve such a law. Common
Sense Media CEO and founder James Steyer, whose nonprofit organization is
lobbying for game-restriction legislation in many states, hailed the
poll's findings. 'We hope the [state] attorneys general will take a look
at these poll results and that they'll side with families over protecting
the profits of the video game industry.'"

CWmike writes "Those who have written off IE as being slow and
old-looking are in for a surprise. The [0]just-released Internet Explorer
9 beta is dramatically faster than its predecessor, sports an elegant,
stripped-down interface and adds some useful new features, writes Preston
Gralla. Even more surprising than the [1]stripped-down interface is IE9
beta's speed. Internet Explorer has long been the slowest browser by a
wide margin. IE9 has turned that around in dramatic fashion, using
hardware acceleration and a new JavaScript engine it calls Chakra, which
compiles scripts in the background and uses multiple processor cores. In
this beta, my tests show it overtaking Firefox for speed, and putting up
a respectable showing against Safari, Opera and Chrome. It's even
integrated into Windows 7. One big problem: [2]It will not work on
Windows XP. So, forget the performance and security boost, many
enterprises and netbook users."

Andorin writes "The UK's Department of Business, Innovation and Skills
(BIS) has released [0]a report (PDF) related to the new Digital Economy
Act. The debate between copyright holders and ISPs about who should front
the costs for the enforcement of the Act's anti-piracy provisions has
come to a close: Rights holders will pay 75% of the copyright enforcement
costs, with [1]the remaining 25% of the bill going to ISPs (and therefore
their customers). Says the Minister for Communications, Ed Vaizey:
'Protecting our valuable creative industries, which have already suffered
significant losses as a result of people sharing digital content without
paying for it, is at the heart of these measures... We expect the
measures will benefit our creative economy by some 200m per year and as
rights holders are the main beneficiaries of the system, we believe our
decision on costs is proportionate to everyone involved.' Not
surprisingly, some ISPs and consumer groups are [2]up in arms about the
decision, with one ISP calling it a government subsidy of the
entertainment industries."

well the technology stacks up against the rising glut of information in
today's datacenters. 'Data deduplication is the process of analyzing
blocks or segments of data on a storage medium and finding duplicate
patterns. By removing the duplicate patterns and replacing them with much
smaller placeholders, overall storage needs can be greatly reduced. This
becomes very important when IT has to plan for backup and disaster

storage investments to go that much further.' Under review are dedupe
