[0]BJ_Covert_Action writes "Some students from the Cockrell School of
Engineering in Austin, Texas have built, developed, launched, and
operated two historic satellites. The [1]FASTRAC satellites make up the
first small-scale satellite system which is composed of two separate
spacecraft that can communicate to each other. On March 22, the single
FASTRAC satellite [2]successfully separated into two smaller spacecraft
that are currently operating and communicating with each other. While
separation and communication has occurred between paired satellites
before, this is the first time it has been done with such a small
platform (the FASTRAC spacecraft weigh approximately 60 lbs.).
Furthermore, this is the first time a student-designed and built space
system has been composed of two separate spacecraft that can interact
with each other. One of the most impressive things about this mission is
that it was done incredibly cheap, at $250,000, which is far below the
costs associated with traditional spacecraft."

kaptink writes with this quote from Groklaw: "Microsoft seems to be
trying to get its own personal unfair competition laws passed state by
state, so it can sue US companies who [0]get parts from overseas
companies who used pirated Microsoft software anywhere in their business.
The laws allow Microsoft to [1]block the US company from selling the
finished product in the state and compel them to pay damages for what the
overseas supplier did. So if a company overseas uses a pirated version of
Excel, let's say, keeping track of how many parts it has shipped or
whatever, and then sends some parts to General Motors or any large
company to incorporate into the finished product, Microsoft can sue not
the overseas supplier but General Motors, for unfair competition. So can
the state's Attorney General. I kid you not. For piracy that was done by
someone else, overseas. The product could be T shirts. It doesn't matter
what it is, so long as it's manufactured with contributions from an
overseas supplier, like in China, who didn't pay Microsoft for software
that it uses somewhere in the business. It's the US company that has to
pay damages, not the overseas supplier."

theodp writes "'Strange beings who landed in New Jersey tonight are the
vanguard of an invading army from Mars.' ([0]Orson Welles, 1938). '[1]Active
shooter at BUILDING NAME/INTERSECTION. Escape area if safe to do so or
shield/secure your location.' (Univ. of Illinois, 2011). An alert message
sent out Thursday to 87,000 emails and cell phones warning recipients to
escape from an 'active shooter' at the University of Illinois was an
error, [2]the Office of the Chief of Police confirmed. 'The alert sent
today was caused by a person making a mistake,' explained an email.
'Rather than pushing the SAVE button to update the pre-scripted message,
the person pushed the SUBMIT button. We are working with the provider of
the Illini-Alert service to implement additional security features in the
program to prevent this type of error.'"

[0]LarsKurth writes "The Xen.org open source community just released a
new version of the Xen Hypervisor, [1]Xen 4.1. Feature highlights include
a new prototype scheduler for latency-sensitive workloads, better support
for very large systems (>255 CPUs, 1GB/2MB super page sizes), new
security features, and many others. During the development cycle of Xen
4.1, the Xen community worked closely with upstream Linux projects to
ensure that [2]Xen dom0 support and [3]Xen guest support are available
from unmodified Linux distributions. The [4]release announcement contains
a full list of changes."

DrPeper writes "I may have an opportunity to assist a pair of renowned
meteorite hunters (yes, the ones on the Science Channel). Being the
MacGyver-type everywhere I've worked and a consummate geek, I thought I
would pose a question to the Slashdot community. If you were to go
meteorite hunting, what gadgets would you use? I've already thought of
using a UAV with a radio gradiometer, or attaching a coil to a
quadrocopter, blimp, or terrestrial robot. (The point of which would be
to have it automatically produce a gradient map of the density of ferrous
metals in a given area.) Any other crazy ideas out there?"

cf18 writes "The French chess federation has [0]suspended three top
players for violating sporting ethics at a chess olympiad in Siberia last
September. The allegation claims while the first member was playing, a
second member would watch the game via internet, use software to find the
best move, and send it to the third member via SMS. The third member
would then sit himself at a particular table in the competition hall.
Each table represented an agreed square on the chess board."
