Lucas123 writes "Over the past four years, [0]vinyl record sales have
been soaring, jumping almost 300% from 858,000 in 2006 to 2.5 million in
2009, and sales this year are on track to reach new peaks, according to
Nielsen Entertainment. Meanwhile, as digital music sales are also
continuing a steady rise, CD sales have been on a fast downward slope
over the same period of time. In the first half of this year alone, CD
album sales were down about 18% over the same period last year. David
Bakula, senior vice president of analytics at Nielsen Entertainment, said
it's not just audiophiles expanding their collections that is driving
vinyl record sales but a whole new generation of young music aficionados
who are digging the album art, liner notes and other features that
records bring to the table. 'The trend sure does seem sustainable. And
the record industry is really doing a lot of cool things to not only make
the format come alive but to make it more exciting for consumers,' Bakula
said."

[0]Hugh Pickens submits news first gleaned from a now-paywalled article
at the New York Times (and, happily, widely reported) that "The hunt for
a copy of the seventh and deciding game of the 1960 World Series,
considered one of the greatest games ever played and long believed to be
lost forever, has [1]come to an end in the home of Bing Crosby, a canny
preservationist of his own legacy, who kept a half-century's worth of
records, tapes and films in the wine cellar turned vault in his
Hillsborough, California home. Crosby loved baseball, but as a part owner
of the Pittsburgh Pirates he was too nervous to watch the Series against
the Yankees, so he and his wife went to Paris, where they listened by
radio. Crosby knew he would want to watch the game later if his Pirates
won so he hired a company to record Game 7 by kinescope, an early
relative of the DVR, filming off a television monitor. The five-reel set,
found in December in Crosby's home, is the only known complete copy of
the game, in which Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a
game-ending home run to beat the Yankees, 10-9."

As_I_Please writes "Scientists at the US National Institute of Standards
and Technology and Purdue University have [0]ruled out neutrino flux as a
cause of previously observed fluctuations in nuclear decay rates. From
the article: 'Researchers ... tested this by comparing radioactive
gold-198 in two shapes, spheres and thin foils, with the same mass and
activity. Gold-198 releases neutrinos as it decays. The team reasoned
that if neutrinos are affecting the decay rate, the atoms in the spheres
should decay more slowly than the atoms in the foil because the neutrinos
emitted by the atoms in the spheres would have a greater chance of
interacting with their neighboring atoms. The maximum neutrino flux in
the sample in their experiments was several times greater than the flux
of neutrinos from the sun. The researchers followed the gamma-ray
emission rate of each source for several weeks and found no difference
between the decay rate of the spheres and the corresponding foils.' The

firms Google, Apple, Intel, Adobe, Intuit and Pixar [1]would be
barred from pledging not to 'cold call' one another's employees. Federal
officials have been scrutinizing such agreements for more than a year,
concerned that they restrained competition for skilled workers and kept
an artificial cap on wages by avoiding expensive bidding wars. If the
court fight had proceeded, it could have helped decide the legality of
such accords, not just in the high-tech sector but across all industries.
But the fight had risks for each side. To win, the Justice Department
would have had to convince a court that workers had suffered significant
harm. A loss for the companies would have opened the door to a rush of
lawsuits."

revive my programming skills this winter so I can write apps for the
flood of mobile devices. I am very much platform / OS agnostic and I
support on any one day OS X, XP, Win 7, Linux servers, and now iOS as we
pilot iPads in our school. My question focuses on three topics: Which
programming environment (iOS or Android) is easier to jump into from a
technical perspective / number of languages needed to master? Which one
has a better SDK ecosystem of documentation, programmer support, and
developer community(s)? Where is the market and the money going? I do not
expect to get rich doing this, but with my insights into K12 needs I hope
I can write effective apps for that market."

leading privacy activist. Warnings appeared when users logged onto Gmail,
encountering a red banner reading 'Your account was recently accessed
from China,' and providing a list of IP addresses used to access the
account. Users were then encouraged to change their password immediately.
Based on Twitter posts, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the
accounts that were accessed, though one target is a prominent privacy
rights activist in the UK who has spoken out against the Chinese
government's censorship of its citizens. A Google spokesman declined to
comment on the latest warnings specifically. The company has been issuing
similar warnings since March when it introduced features to identify
suspicious account activity."
