An anonymous reader writes "Reports are coming in that the Information
Commissioner's Office has started investigating FIFA, the world football
governing body, over allegations that details of thousands of World Cup
fans' including their passport data were accessed by one or more
members of staff and then [0]sold on the black market. It is alleged that
the details of more than 35,000 English fans who visited Germany for
the 2006 World Cup had their passport and allied data sold to ticket
touts for marketing purposes."

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

myrdos2 writes "A study by a German military think tank leaked to the
Internet warns of the potential for a [0]dire global economic crisis in
as little as 15 years as a result of a peak and an irreversible decline
in world oil supplies. The study states that there is 'some probability
that peak oil will occur around the year 2010 and that the impact on
security is expected to be felt 15 to 30 years later. ... In the medium
term the global economic system and every market-oriented national
economy would collapse.' The report [1]closely matches one from the US
military earlier this year, which stated that surplus oil production
capacity could disappear within two years and there could be serious
shortages by 2015 with a significant economic and political impact."

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

An anonymous reader, quoting from CBS News, writes "'The first court
award in a vaccine-autism claim is a big one. CBS News has learned the
family of Hannah Poling [0]will receive more than $1.5 million for her
life care, lost earnings, and pain and suffering for the first year alone.
In addition to the first year, the family will receive more than $500,000
per year to pay for Hannah's care. Those familiar with the case believe
the compensation could easily amount to $20 million over the child's
lifetime. ... In acknowledging Hannah's injuries, the government said
vaccines aggravated an unknown mitochondrial disorder Hannah had which
didn't 'cause' her autism, but 'resulted' in it. It's unknown how many
other children have similar undiagnosed mitochondrial disorders. All
other autism 'test cases' have been defeated at trial. Approximately
4,800 are awaiting disposition in federal vaccine court.' How did this
happen when all the scientific data points otherwise?"

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

An anonymous reader writes "For years the US Patent and Trademark Office
has published data to show how well it and the patent system were
running. Under new leadership, the USPTO has begun to publish a
[0]dashboard of information, including a new look at questions like how
long does it really take to get a final answer on whether you will
receive a patent or not? The pat answer was, on the average, about 3
years. But with the new figures, it's obvious that the real number, when
you don't play games with how you define a patent application, is [1]six
years. The backlog of patents is almost 730K. And the Commerce Department
under the Obama administration wants the average down to 20 months. How
does this happen? Only if everyone closes their eyes and pretends. It's
time to take drastic action, like ending software patents. As it is, by
the time companies get a software patent, there's little value to them
because, after six years, the industry has already moved on."

itwbennett writes "In a WSJ interview, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said that
'[0]Google TV starts shipping this month.' Although, as blogger Peter
Smith notes, 'Exactly which devices he means isn't clear. Sony TVs and
the Logitech Revue will be the first out so if he is referring to a
finished consumer project, he's referring to one or the other of those,
but as CNET points out, he might be referring to [1]product shipping to
retail rather than being on sale to consumers this month. Either way, it
looks like [2]you'll be able to have Google TV in your living room by
sometime in October at the latest.' What, if anything does this mean for
the Boxee Box, which is still due in November? 'If Google is out there
first, and puts marketing muscle behind Google TV (and of course they're
including it built into some televisions) it might be hard for Boxee to
find its niche,' says Smith. 'Particularly with that bizarre form factor
that won't fit anywhere.'"

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

An anonymous reader writes "For most people, wisdom teeth are not much
more than an annoyance that eventually needs to be removed. However, a
new study appearing in the September 17 Journal of Biological Chemistry
shows that [0]wisdom teeth contain a valuable reservoir of tissue for the
creation of stem cells; thus, everyone might be carrying around his or
her own personal stem-cell repository should he or she ever need some.
Groundbreaking research back in 2006 revealed that inducing the activity
of four genes in adult cells could 'reprogram' them back into a
stem-cell-like state; biologically, these induced-pluripotent stem cells
are virtually identical to embryonic stem cells, opening up a new
potential avenue for stem-cell therapy whereby patients could be treated
with their own stem cells."

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

pickens writes "The Washington Post reports that last major [0]GE factory
making ordinary incandescent light bulbs in the US is closing this month,
marking a small, sad exit for a product and company that can trace their
roots to Thomas Alva Edison's innovations in the 1870s. What made the
plant vulnerable is, in part, a 2007 energy conservation measure passed
by Congress that set standards essentially banning ordinary incandescents
by 2014 but rather than setting off a boom in the U.S. manufacture of
replacement lights, the leading replacement lights are compact
fluorescents, or CFLs, which are made almost entirely overseas. GE
developed a plan to see what it would take to retrofit a plant that makes
traditional incandescents into one that makes CFLs but even with a $40
million investment the new plant's CFLs would have cost about 50 percent
more than those from China. 'Everybody's jumping on the green bandwagon,'
says Pat Doyle, 54, who has worked at the plant for 26 years. But 'we've
been sold out. First sold out by the government. Then sold out by GE.'"

garymortimer writes "Still not reported elsewhere, Flight International
reports [0]another crash of the Boeing Hummingbird helicopter UAV. The
Hummingbird A160 is in development, but test flights already demonstrate
successively greater endurance, higher altitudes, more extensive
autonomy, and greater payload. The program has ambitious goals of a
2,500-mile (4,000 km) range, 24-hour endurance, and 30,000 ft (9,100 m)
altitude. Flights are largely autonomous, with the aircraft making its
own decisions about how to fly itself so as to meet certain objectives,
rather than relying on real-time human control. Maximum speeds are over
140 knots. The aircraft is 35 ft (11 m) from nose to tail and has a rotor
diameter of 36 ft (11 m).[2] Until recently it was powered by modified
Subaru automotive engines, but newer versions fly with the Pratt &
Whitney PW207D turboshaft."
