to put tabs under (rather than above) the location bar: "This issue has

Google revealed their view on the community, saying that feedback and
comments aren't considered, and today moved to silence dissent and lock
comments on the issue. [A Chromium developer] says, 'Commenting on this

Facebook's data collection practices. One complaint that has failed to
draw much scrutiny regards Facebook's creation of [3]Shadow Profiles.
'This is done by different functions that encourage users to hand
personal data of other users and non-users to Facebook... (e.g.
synchronizing mobile phones, importing personal data from e-mail
providers, importing personal information from instant messaging
services, sending invitations to friends or saving search queries when
users search for other people on facebook.com). This means that even if
you don't use it, you may already have a profile on Facebook.'"

Samsung patent fight, the ABC is reporting that Samsung has filed in
Australian and Japanese courts [0]seeking an injunction to halt sales of
the iPhone 4S for alleged 3G patent violations. It remains to be seen
whether Samsung has any better luck with the retaliatory strike in
Australian and Japanese courts than it did with [1]courts in the
Netherlands. Unfortunately, I expect that Samsung will fail partly
because of overseas precedent, but mostly because their patents are sane,
technical and narrow in scope (unlike the patent-a-rectangle nature of
the opposition). If this stupidity ever stops, then millions of dollars,
euro, or Won that are being spent on lawyers might actually go into the
innovation that patents are meant to promote. Who knows where that might
lead?"

monkey' news feed that "When Iran indefinitely suspended its plans to
launch a monkey into space earlier this month, it was actually because
they [0]had already tried and failed. Iranian Deputy Science Minister
Mohammad Mehdinejad-Nouri told state media that the Kavoshgar-5 rocket
carrying a capsule with a live monkey launched during Shahrivar, which is
the Iranian month spanning August 23 to September 22, but the launch was
not publicized because it did not accomplish all of its mission
objectives. Assuming one of the objectives was to safely carry the monkey
to space and back, things don't sound good for the monkey."

minimum than before, allowing large container ships and oil tankers ��� the

Musical group Marconi Union and Lyz Cooper, the UK's leading therapeutic
sound practitioner, have released what they claim is [0]the world's most
relaxing music. They contend that the calming effects of "Weightless" are
not subjective but are based on scientific evidence. The music was found
to cause brainwaves and heart rate to synchronize with the rhythm, reduce
blood pressure and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. In fact,
Scientists played the song to 40 women and found it to be [1]11% more
effective at helping them relax than songs by Enya, Mozart and Coldplay.
The eight-minute track is so effective at inducing sleep, motorists have
now been warned they should not listen to it while driving.

drivers' BlackBerrys weren't working. Police in the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) have claimed that last week's worldwide [1]BlackBerry outage, which
frustrated business people around the world who were unable to
communicate with their colleagues, had one positive result ��� less texting
and reading of emails by people who should have been concentrating on
driving instead. There could be other factors at play, however. For
instance, popular UAE soccer player Theyab Awana was killed in a high
speed crash near Abu Dhabi in September, amid claims that he was sending
a message on his BlackBerry when he hit a lorry. The football star's
father, Awana Ahmad Al Mosabi, made an emotional plea to people not to
use smartphones while driving, and a Facebook campaign against the use of
BlackBerry Messenger while driving has grown in popularity."

project a 360 degree 3D image that doesn't require glasses. Funding for

the world's hard disk manufacturing capacity offline, InfoWorld reports.
'Disk manufacturing sites in Thailand ��� notably including the largest
Western Digital plant ��� were shut down due to floods around Bangkok last
week and are expected to remain shut for at least several more days. The
end to flooding is not in sight, and Western Digital now says it could
take [2]five to eight months to bring its plants back online.' Toshiba's

born spinning and continues to do so around a preferred axis." The full
paper [1]has more details. The researchers measured the spin of a number
of galaxies in the northern hemisphere; the data indicated a distinct
bias toward left-handed spins. "Longo says that the chance that it could
be a cosmic accident is something like one in a million. 'If galaxies
tend to spin in a certain direction, it means that the overall universe
should have a rather large net angular momentum. Since angular momentum
is conserved, it seems it [the universe] must have been "born"
spinning.'" Naturally, there is some skepticism: "Neta Bahcall, an
astrophysicist at Princeton University in the US, feels that there is no
solid evidence for a rotating universe. 'The directional spin of spiral
galaxies may be impacted by other local gravitational effects,' she said.
She believes that this could result in small correlations in spin
rotation over distances less than about 200 Mpc ��� whereas the observable
universe is about 14 Gpc in size."

non-identical twins have helped to establish the heritability of many
aspects of behavior. Recent work suggests that about [1]one third of the
variation in people's happiness is heritable. Jan-Emmanuel De Neve has
taken the study a step further, picking a popular suspect ��� the gene that
encodes the serotonin-transporter protein, a molecule that shuffles a
brain messenger called serotonin through cell membranes ��� and [2]examined
how variants of the 5-HTT gene affect levels of happiness. The
serotonin-transporter gene comes in two functional variants���long and
short and people have two versions (known as alleles) of each gene, one
from each parent. After examining genetic data from more than 2,500
participants in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, De
Neve found that people with one long allele were 8% more likely than
those with none to describe themselves as very satisfied with life and
those with two long alleles were 17% more likely of describing themselves
as very satisfied. Interestingly enough, there is a notable variation
across races with Asian Americans in the sample having on average 0.69
long genes, white Americans with 1.12, and black Americans with 1.47. 'It
has long been suspected that this gene plays a role in mental health but
this is the first study to show that it is [3]instrumental in shaping our
individual happiness levels (PDF),' writes De Neve. 'This finding helps
to explain why we each have a unique baseline level of happiness and why
some people tend to be naturally happier than others, and that's in no
small part due to our individual genetic make-up.'"

Just over a year ago, Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV. It [0]was
not well received, and to atone for their mistake, the company [1]removed
the game's subscription fee, replaced a bunch of the developers, and
[2]delayed the PS3 version. Now, they are confident enough in the updates
they've brought to the game that they are [3]re-instituting the
subscription plan and working again on the PS3 version, though it's still
about a year away. They've also [4]explained their roadmap for version
2.0 of the game, which will include a new UI, a new graphics engine, and
a redesign of all current maps.

recent report that a [1]comet may have narrowly missed earth. According
to the linked post from Plait, "When a comet breaks up, it spreads out.
Even when intact, the material surrounding a comet can be tens or even
hundreds of thousands of kilometers across! Claiming that a comet broke
apart, yet managed to constrain its pieces to volume of space less than a
few thousand kilometers across strains credulity. Mind you, Bonilla
claimed to have seen these objects over the course of two days. That
means they would���ve been stretched out along a path that was a million km
long at least, yet so narrow that only one observatory on Earth saw them
transit the Sun. That is highly unlikely. Worse, the very fact that no
one else saw anything makes this claim even less tenable."

similar to Stuxnet. This code however appears to serve a different

Landing an accepted submission, notanymore writes "The [0]PA Supreme
Court now has a Twitter account to [1]post rulings and opinions. How
could this be a bad thing? It's progression toward making public
information more easily accessible. Some argue that it's public shaming
but isn't it the [2]same as a newspaper reporting on local crime?"
