Between 1560 and 1599, The Geneva Bible was providentially unleashed upon a dark, discouraged, downtrodden English speaking world. Just when it looked as if the Machiavellian, Divine Right kings, such as the Tudors of England, were about to drive Christendom back to the days of Caesar worship, a Bible appeared that set the stage for a Christian Reformation of life and culture the likes of which the world had never seen.

The Pilgrims brought the 1599 Geneva Bible with them when they arrived in the New World in 1620. All but forgotten in our day, this version of the Bible was the most widely read and influential English Bible of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A superb translation, it was the product of the best Protestant scholars of the day and became the Bible of choice for many of the greatest writers and thinkers of that time.

Choosing an Enterprise Firewall for 2011 and Beyond
Firewalls are evolving. Enterprises now require a set of technologies that were previously unheard of. Perhaps most notably, application visibility and control has made its way to the forefront of the requirements list for enterprise firewalls. For an enterprise, the difficulty is understanding the different approaches and how they fulfill the organization's requirements. Understand how the enterprise firewall is evolving, the technology itself, how to deploy it, and ultimately how to select it. http://p.sf.net/sfu/palo-alto-sdnews

RedEaredSlider writes "NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has found a
[0]giant buried deposit of dry ice, which could be evidence that Mars
once had a thicker atmosphere and was able to have more water on its
surface. The orbiter's ground-penetrating radar found the dry ice, which
is frozen carbon dioxide, near the planet's south pole. The scientists
think that when Mars' axial tilt increases, the carbon dioxide turns into
a gas, thickening the atmosphere. The result would be more intense dust
storms, but also a wider range of areas where liquid water could exist."

StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder recently spoke with Gamasutra
about how designing a real-time strategy game for competition can
sometimes be [0]at odds with designing something purely for the sake of
fun. "'It took me a year and a half to figure this out,' said Browder, an
enthusiastic designer who might also be around the top 10 percent in the
world in terms of speed-talking. 'I kept trying to shove stuff in that
was fun but wasn't a sport,' he said. 'And everybody would tell me "no,"
and I wouldn't understand why. And I thought they were all jerks. I
didn't know, right? I couldn't figure it out.' ... 'It took me a long
time to understand why this sport value is so important,' Browder
continued. The development team kept itself in check, nixing units that
overlapped with the roles of other units and dumping units that were
deemed too complicated. Some of the units cut were fun to use, but just
didn't fit with the game's objectives as an eSport. 'It makes it so
challenging for designers on the project to come up with new and good
ideas,' said Browder. 'We could sit here right now, and come up with 10
great ideas for an RTS. But I almost guarantee you that all of those
would get shot down for a sport.'"

Gaming site Giant Bomb got its hands on some internal memos at Activision
discussing [0]the status of their flagship Call of Duty franchise. One
exec asks, "Isn't Call of Duty today just like Guitar Hero was a few
years back?" A response assures him that Call of Duty is more firmly
entrenched than the recently-collapsed music game genre, and adds that
Activision doesn't get enough credit for innovating. Quoting: "If you
really step back and dispassionately look at any measurementsales,
player engagement, hours of online play, performance of DLCyou can
absolutely conclude that the potential for this franchise has never been
greater. In order to achieve this potential, we need to focus: on making
games that constantly raise the quality bar; on staying ahead of the
innovation curve; on surrounding the brand with a suite of services and
an online community that makes our fans never want to leave.
Entertainment franchises with staying power are rare. But Call of Duty
shows all of the signs of being able to be one of them. Its up to us.
... Activision doesnt always seem to get the credit it deserves in terms
of innovation in my opinion, but there is no short supply of it, even in
our narrower slate." An editorial at Gamepro takes exception to this,
saying that Activision should [1]stop trying to milk its franchises dry.

the design of the PlayBook as a BlackBerry-dependent device was simply a
boneheaded decision by executives who hoped a hit product might entice
more BlackBerry sales,' Gruman writes. 'Why RIM chose to ship the

From there, by cross-referencing this location with city records, they

Several readers have sent in follow-up articles to Wednesday's news that
iPhone location data was being [0]tracked and stored. First, it seems
[1]Android shares a similar problem, though the file containing the
location data is "only accessible on devices that have been rooted and
opened up to installation of unsigned apps." Developer Magnus Eriksson
has created [2]an app to flush this data. Next: the iPhone tracking file
is [3]not new, just in a different place than it used to be. Reader
overThruster then points out a CNet story indicating that [4]law
enforcement has been aware of this file for some time, and has used it in
a forensics context. This story is a growing concern for Apple,
particularly now that [5]Senator Al Franken (PDF) and [6]Rep. Ed Markey
(PDF) have both written letters to Steve Jobs demanding details about the
location tracking. Finally, PCMag explains [7]how to view the location
data present on your iPhone, should you so desire.
