court permission to intercept or wiretap electronic communications
increased [1]34% in 2010 over 2009 with California, New York, and New

According to the 2010 Wiretap Report, released today by the

frequently noted location in wiretap requests was 'portable device,' a
category that includes cellular telephones and digital pagers."

[0]MojoKid writes "Promise Technology recently launched the first
Thunderbolt-compatible devices; the company's Pegasus RAID R4 and R6
storage solutions can now be ordered from the Apple Store. There's a
catch, however. In order to use either storage array, [1]one must first
purchase a cable directly from Apple. The company has priced the
two-meter cable at $50. As it turns out, Thunderbolt uses what's called
an active cable. Inside the cable there's a pair of Gunnum GN2033
transceivers. The GN2033 is a tiny, low power transceiver chip designed
to be placed inside the connectors at either end of a Thunderbolt cable,
enabling dual bidirectional 10Gb/s concurrent links over narrow-gauge
copper wires. The cable's $50 price may be justified, but it's also a
further reminder of why Thunderbolt may follow FireWire's path into
obsolescence. Apple is the only company currently selling Thunderbolt
cables."

Following up on news from earlier this week that Valve [0]made Team

will be free to all as well. Quoting Rock, Paper, Shotgun: "The Source
Software Development Kit, for those of you who've never clicked the Tools
tab in Steam, contains everything you'd need to make a mod, except for
personal ambition. It has everything from the infamous Valve Hammer
Editor to Face Posers and Model Viewers. At the moment, to gain access to
[2]the Source SDK you have to purchase a Source based game such as Half
Life 2, or as the official website states, Team Fortress 2. Which is of
course now free. [Valve's Robin Walker said], 'We are in the process of
getting it all done. Its a bit messy because we have multiple versions
of the SDK, and theres some dependencies we need to shake out. But yes,
the gist of it is that were just going to go ahead and make the Source
SDK freely available.'"

Speaking at Gamerlab 2011 in Barcelona, [0]MUD1 developer Richard Bartle
had [1]harsh words for the current state of social gaming: "The big thing
about social games that they don't like to tell you, is they're not
actually social. Games played on social network sites is what we mean by
social games ... These games are categorized more by the platform than
that they are social themselves. The way they engage their players is not
through interesting gameplay, it's done through extrinsic rewards
basically bribes. ... The difference is, social games rely on the
extrinsic rewards so as to be compelling. People keep playing the game
because it keeps giving them things rewards. This has led to
gamification. In the hands of designers, this has a great deal of
potential, but unfortunately it's not in the hands of designers, it's in
the hands of marketers."

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) satellite provider fought the ruling

international bodies. A similar case took place when French satellite
company Eutelsat cut NTD TV's broadcast into China just short of the 2008

employees red handed, recording admissions they cut the service due to

signature, musical key, as well as subjective criteria like "energy" and
"danceability," the pair generated [1]a number of visualizations with
Google Motion Charts (warning: slow) and '(some) Tableau Results' for

examples of 'security theater' at its worst. From the article: 'The
problem isn't that the TSA is harassing the wrong people. The problem is
that the TSA is harassing anyone. The TSA is encroaching on fundamental
liberties and providing no discernable benefit. ... Naturally, the TSA
responds to incidents like these by saying that the agents are highly
trained and that they have followed proper procedure. This indicates a
signal failing for the agency: if "doing it by the book" involves
touching people in ways that would be considered sexual assault in
virtually any other context or telling a 90-year old breast cancer
survivor to remove her bra lest it contain explosives (as happened to a
friend's grandmother), then the book needs to be shredded and rewritten.
Better yet, it needs to be replaced with a competitive market for air
travel in which the airports, the airways, and the airliners are in
private hands. Some might object that private firms will have incentives
to cut corners on safety. It is a legitimate concern, but competitive
mechanisms tend to weed this out.'"

On Monday [0]we discussed news of a Supreme Court ruling which held that
violent video games deserved free speech protection under the First
Amendment. Now, frequent Slashdot contributor Bennett Haselton writes
with this followup that questions the Court's consistency in such
matters. "I'm glad the Supreme Court struck down the California law
against selling violent video games to minors, but reading over the
decision, I had the odd feeling that the arguments by the dissenters made
more sense than the majority mainly because of the hypocrisy of
continuing to ban sexuality while giving violence a pass." Read on for
the rest of Bennett's thoughts.

Wi-Fi networks. Their admission led to a number of [1]investigations and
[2]complaints around the globe, and a U.S. District Court Judge has now

An anonymous reader writes "A new study by a team of U.S. researchers
found that commercial and private jetliners may be [0]contributing to a
form of accidental cloud seeding. When an airplane flies through a cloud,
its propellers cause the expansion and cooling of the air behind them
which can cause water droplets to spontaneously cool and crystals to
form. The aircraft sets off a chain reaction in the cloud that can
continue on for hours after the plane has passed by. The researchers also
discovered that this phenomenon is more common near the poles, where many
of Earth's weather monitoring systems are, and it could be skewing data
that research teams are gathering in those areas."
