+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

ElectricSteve writes "Research conducted at the University of Bristol
means a number of quantum computing algorithms may soon be able to
execute calculations of a complexity far beyond what today's computers
allow us to do. The breakthrough [0]involves the use of a specially
designed optical chip to perform what's known as a '[1]quantum walk' with
two particles ... and it suggests the era of quantum computing may be
approaching faster than the scientific establishment had predicted. A
random walk a mathematical concept with useful applications in computer
science is the trajectory of an object taking successive steps in a
random direction, be it over a line (with only two possible directions)
or over a multi-dimensional space. A quantum walk is the same concept,
but translated to the world of quantum computing, a field in which
randomness plays a central role. Quantum walks form an essential part of
many of the algorithms that make this new kind of computation so
promising, including search algorithms that will perform exponentially
faster than the ones we use today."

adeelarshad82 writes "Intel has confirmed that the leaked HDCP master key
protecting millions of Blu-ray discs and devices that was posted to the
Web this week is legitimate. The disclosure means, in effect, that [0]all
Blu-ray discs can now be unlocked and copied. HDCP (High Definition
Content Protection), which was created by Intel and is administered by
Digital Content Protection LLP, is the content encryption scheme that
protects data, typically movies, as they pass across a DVI or an HDMI
cable. According to an Intel official, the most likely scenario for a
hacker would be to create a computer chip with the master key embedded
it, that could be used to decode Blu-ray discs."

lukehopewell1 writes "In an interview for the ABC's PM program yesterday,
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said that there [0]would be no
conscience vote on the Australian government's [1]proposed mandatory
internet filter. 'Conscience votes go to matters to do with life and
death in the [Australian] Labor Party,' Conroy said. The minister said
that the filter debate was not about censorship, rather it centred around
refused classification material an issue up for review in parliament.
'I'm not sure that the censorship claim stacks up. This is about
classification systems. At the moment in Australia, there is no
conscience vote on refused classification for movies, TV, DVDs or book
stores,' the minister said. Conroy then called on the newly installed
Shadow Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to justify his position
on the filter to families concerned about child pornography. 'According
to the latest information I have here from the [Australian Communications
and Media Authority], there are 430 child pornography sites on the [World
Wide Web] ... that are accessible to anyone...[Malcolm Turnbull] has to
explain to Australian families that he is prepared to do nothing about
blocking access to those sites,' Conroy added." I hope some Australian
and UK readers can help the rest of us understand the significance of
conscience votes, though [2]Wikipedia helps.

itwbennett writes "Peter Smith is blogging about the free [0]iSwifter
app, which aims to solve the 'no Flash games on iPads' problem. The app,
which is currently available for the iPad and planned for the iPhone and
other devices, '[1]streams Flash games to your iPad. You run the app,
which contacts iSwifter servers, which are actually running the Flash.
Ideally, the effect is identical to running the app directly from a web
page.' Smith tested the app and calls it an 'interesting idea,' but an
imperfect solution at least right now."

first privately funded craft to make two manned descents to the bottom of
[1]Challenger Deep, the deepest surveyed point in the oceans. Now, James
Cameron has [2]announced he has commissioned a submarine capable of
surviving the tremendous pressures at a depth of seven miles, from which
he will not only try for the X prize but also shoot 3D footage that may

waderoush writes "Twitter has come out with some impressive new tools
this month the Twitter app for iPhone/iPad on September 1, and the
[0]overhauled Twitter website, or #NewTwitter, this week. But [1]Twitter
is late to its own party, Xconomy argues today. #NewTwitter still lacks
basics like photo uploading and URL shortening, and apps built by
third-party developers like TweetDeck and Flipboard continue to provide
more compelling ways to explore the information in a Twitter stream.
While [2]Twitter may finally be 'getting focused' on ways to achieve mass
market growth, as former Twitter platform manager Alex Payne wrote this
week, the company will have a hard time competing with its own developer
community and might do better instead to acknowledge, and focus on, the
service's growing role as a general Internet utility."

[0]Sooner Boomer writes "ComputerWorld has an article about the Stuxnet
worm, which was apparently [1]designed to steal industrial secrets and
disrupt operations at industrial plants, according to Siemens. 'Stuxnet
has infected systems in the UK, North America and Korea, however the
largest number of infections, by far, have been in Iran. Once installed
on a PC, Stuxnet uses Siemens' default passwords to seek out and try to
gain access to systems that run the WinCC and PCS 7 programs so-called
PLC (programmable logic controller) programs that are used to manage
large-scale industrial systems on factory floors and in military
installations and chemical and power plants.' If the worm were to be used
to disrupt systems at any of those locations, the results could be
devastating."
