Matthew Travis from the [0]Ares Institute Inc helped me get a press pass
for the STS-135 Launch. so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for no
scrub. I'm [1]tweeting as @cmdrtaco from the launch if you are into that
sort of thing. I'll have more later, but for now you'll have to make do
with a photo I took, as well as a brief video clip I took of Atlantis on

Coldeagle writes "Apple has been dealt a blow in its [0]'App Store'

injunction to stop Amazon from using the term." Apple probably wouldn't
trade the name exclusivity it seeks, though, for the success they've

[0]CWmike writes "No botnet is invulnerable, a Microsoft lawyer involved

Coreflood and Rustock this year show that any botnet can be exterminated.

that will unlock complete online access for certain games. "The company
didn't offer details on how used and rental players would access online
features in these titles, but did clarify that first-party use of the

similar to the "Online Pass" that EA [1]rolled out last year, and to
Sony's own [2]experiment with SOCOM 4. Sony's explanation for the Pass
will probably leave you wishing Google Translate supported
marketing-speak: "This is an important initiative as it allows us to

Council (TAC) to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommended

that everyone who now has PSTN service has access to either a broadband

sealed plans Friday to [1]phase out nuclear energy by 2022, making the
country the first major industrial power to take the step in the wake of
the disaster at Japan's Fukushima plant. The nuclear exit scheme cleared

Wiretapping Technologies is a hard book to categorize. It is not about
security, but it deals extensively with it. It is not a law book, but
legal topics are pervasive throughout. It is not a telecommunications

[0]Harperdog with this excerpt from a story about using statistics to
fight crime: "Its great when cops catch criminals after they've done
their dirty work. But what if police could stop a crime before it was
even committed? Though that may sound like a fantasy straight from a
Philip K. Dick novel, it's a goal police departments from Los Angeles to
Memphis are actively pursuing with help from the Department of Justice
and a handful of cutting-edge academics. It's called 'predictive
policing.' The idea: Although no one can foresee individual crimes, it is
possible to [1]forecast patterns of where and when homes are likely to be
burgled or cars stolen by analyzing truckloads of past crime reports and
other data with sophisticated computer algorithms. 'We know where crime
has occurred in the last month, but that doesn't mean it'll be there next
month,' Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Sean Malinowski says. 'The only
way for us to continue to have crime reduction is to start anticipating
where crime is going to occur.'"

forcing Crysis 2 off Steam. (And this may be just the first shot in the

games from other publishers in the future.) Now, EA has announced that
Origin will include some degree of cross-platform support, and will

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) on the inclusion of entitlement cuts in any debt-limit deal :

"There's been very little conversation between the White House and the Senate about this, and I think they're making a grievous mistake if they think they can just present anything to us and assume that because we're Democrats, we'll go along with what the president has capitulated to. "

COMMENT OF THE DAY

MinnesotaRaised on Ed O'Keefe 's "Gay troops cheer 'don't ask, don't tell' court ruling" story:

There was a time in this country when we thought that African Americans could not peacefully integrated into service with white people, and that was proved patently false. This is a necessary change.

Q&A DISCUSSIONS

Chris Cillizza was online at 11 a.m. ET to discuss the week in politics :

Q: Obvious bad news for Obama [the June unemployment rate], but I wonder if this news will put more pressure on Congress to make a deal or will make each side retreat to their corners?

Chris Cillizza:

I think the struggling economic numbers will further embolden Republican negotiators to push for a deal that is very favorable to their side. It's not clear whether the President will allow that to happen or not. But, Republicans clearly believe today's jobs numbers put President Obama over a political barrel; it's hard for him to make the case that his approach to the economy is making things better with numbers like these.
