[0]Hugh Pickens writes "ABA Journal reports that the chief of the
International Monetary Fund may claim consent as a defense to
[1]accusations that he sexually assaulted a maid at the Sofitel Hotel in
New York as defense lawyer Benjamin Brafman told the judge he believed
the 'forensic evidence' was '[2]not consistent with forcible encounter.'
Police have said the maid knocked on Strauss-Kahn's door and called out,
used her master keycard to open the door, and left her work cart in the
doorway, a typical safety practice in hotels. According to the police
account, Strauss-Kahn emerged naked, tried to attack the maid, and then
shut the hotel door when she tried to escape. The NY Times explains how
the key card evidence may play out: 'If the defense for Mr. Strauss-Kahn
maintains that the encounter was consensual, its version will have to
accommodate the [3]unambiguous computer record of her leaving the door
propped open,' the story says."

Nidi62 writes "A Duke University blog covers the possible
[0]ramifications of a motion in the copyright case against Georgia State
University. Cambrigde, Oxford, and Sage have proposed an injunction that
would first enjoin GSU to include all faculty, employees, students. All
copying would have to be monitored and limited to 10% of a work or 1000
words, whichever is less. No two classes would be allowed to use the same
copied work unless they paid for it, essentially taking fair use out of
the classroom. Along with this, courses would be allowed to be made up of
only 10% copied material, the other 90% must be either purchased works or
copies that have been paid for by permission fees. And, if this isn't
enough, the publishers also want access to all computer systems on the
campus network, to monitor compliance and copying. 'This proposed order,
in short, represents a nightmare, a true dystopia, for higher
education....Yet you can be sure that if [these] things happen, all of
our campuses would be pressured to adopt the "Georgia State model" in
order to avoid litigation.' Disclosure: I am currently a graduate student

alphadogg writes "A planned presentation on security vulnerabilities in
Siemens industrial control systems was pulled Wednesday over worries that
the [0]information in the talk was too dangerous to be released.
Independent security researcher Brian Meixell and Dillon Beresford, with
NSS Labs, had been planning to talk Wednesday at a [1]Dallas security
conference about problems in Siemens PLC systems, the industrial
computers widely used to open and shut valves on factory floors and power
plants, control centrifuges, and even operate systems on warships. But
the researchers decided to pull the talk at the last minute after Siemens
and the US Department of Homeland Security pointed out the possible scope
of the problem."

An anonymous reader writes "I run an FTP server for a few dozen people,
and it seems like every week I have a random IP address connect to my box
and try guessing 'Administrator' passwords once every five seconds or so.
This poses no real risk to me, since all my accounts have custom
(uncommon) names. But if this is happening to me, I would wager lots of
people are at risk of low level, persistent, long term password cracking
attempts. Is there a way to report the perpetrators, or any action we can
take to address this kind of danger?"
