'council' and an 'expert body' to decide [1]which websites should be
blocked by ISPs for infringing copyright. The controversial Digital

cost of two non-judicial independent bodies and the cost to ISPs of

'deep-dialing.' Just search for the company on their website (apparently

your phone number in, and Fonolo calls the company on your behalf and
dials you back when the agent is available for free. They have a
business product that provides this same service (visual dialing), plus
virtual queuing and data pass-through." One company creates a phone

[0]CWmike writes "While ISPs may [1]fret about Netflix, Hulu and other
streaming media services saturating their bandwidth, Internet forefather
Vint Cerf has a simple answer for this potential problem: [2]Increase
bandwidth exponentially. With sufficient bandwidth, streaming video
services of prerecorded content wouldn't be necessary, said the
now-technology evangelist at Google. With sufficient throughput, the
entire file of a movie or television show could be downloaded in a
fraction of the time that it would take to stream the content. Cerf,
speaking at Juniper Network's Nextwork conference, spoke about the
company's decision to outfit Kansas City with fiber-optic connections
that Google [3]claims will be 100 times faster than today's services. The
purpose of the project was 'to demonstrate what happens when you have
gigabit speeds available,' Cerf said. 'Some pretty dramatic applications
are possible.' One obvious application is greater access to
high-definition video, he explained. 'When you are watching video today,
streaming is a very common practice. At gigabit speeds, a video file [can
be transferred] faster than you can watch it,' he said. 'So rather than
[receiving] the bits out in a synchronous way, instead you could download
the hour's worth of video in 15 seconds and watch it at your leisure.' He
adds: 'It actually puts less stress on the network to have the higher
speed of operation.'"

Andy Baio of Waxy.org recently organized a chiptune tribute project for
Miles Davis' acclaimed Kind of Blue album. What was intended as a
creative labor of love turned into a nightmare for Baio when a copyright
claim [0]demanded exorbitant sums while glossing over fair use. He
writes, "I went out of my way to make sure the entire project was above
board, licensing all the cover songs from Miles Davis's publisher and
giving the total profits from the Kickstarter fundraiser to the five
musicians that participated. But there was one thing I never thought
would be an issue: the cover art." Despite strongly believing that his
pixelated version of the original cover art fell under fair use, Baio
eventually decided his cheapest option was to settle out of court, paying
the original photographer $32,500. "Anyone can file a lawsuit and the
costs of defending yourself against a claim are high, regardless of how
strong your case is. Combined with vague standards, the result is a
chilling effect for every independent artist hoping to build upon or
reference copyrighted works."

supply and its own proprietary plug. There oughta be a better way, says
Alfred Poor. Fortunately, he reports, [1]the IEEE is coming to the rescue.
"Their Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices (UPAMD) Working Group
is developing a new standard that will not just address the needs of
laptops and tablets, but will be intended to work with just about any
electronics device that required between 10 and 240 watts of power," Poor
writes. It's about darned time." If there's one thing I wish for all
laptop power supplies, it's that they would license from Apple (or work
around, patent-wise) the magnet attachment system that makes
cable-tripping far less dangerous to man or beast, compared to a few
years ago.

KentuckyFC writes "The published human genome is [0]contaminated with DNA
sequences from mycoplasma bacteria, according to bioinformatics
researchers who blame an epidemic of mycoplasma contamination in
molecular biology labs around the world. The researchers say they've also
found mycoplasma DNA in two commercially available human DNA chips made
by biotech companies for measuring levels of human gene expression. So
anybody using these chips to measure human gene expression is also
unknowingly measuring mycoplasma gene expression too. The [1]mycoplasma
genes are clearly successful in reproducing themselves in silico raising
the possibility that we're seeing the beginnings of an entirely new kind
of landscape of infection. One option to combat this kind of virtual
infection is to protect databases with the genomic version of antivirus
software, a kind of virtual immune system. But this in itself could make
things worse by triggering an evolutionary arms race that selects genes
most capable of beating the safeguards."
