A national primary would eliminate this quadrennial issue.
Q&A DISCUSSIONS
Dana Milbank was online at noon ET to discuss the week in politics:
Q: Dana, I'm an FAA employee who was furlough as a result of this avoidable political gambit. Many of my co-workers and I felt like we were just sacrificial pawns. Do you really think that Mica honestly believes the political fallout he's received is just "a gotcha?" He must be more astute than that. Also, most importantly, do you expect that we'll be in a similar situation in mid-September when Congress takes up the issue, and then has to decide all over again whether or not to reauthorize our agency? Thanks.
Dana Milbank:
I was in your office yesterday! (Assuming you're at 800 Independence SW, the "Orville Wright Building.") It was very still. In fact I was going to write all about that stillness, but a couple of hours later everything came back to life. I think Mica feels the Dems' reaction this week was a gotcha, because they could have had this same deal on Monday. I have a feeling based on the time I spent talking with Mica that they don't have the stomach to have another fight over this. They'll work out some ways to cut back on the rural air subsidies -- both sides agree that's necessary -- and I'll bet the attempt to reverse the union rule goes nowhere.
