GOP Candidate Chris Cox: Obama Policy 'Insane'

Republican New York congressional candidate Chris Cox says President Barack Obama is engaging in reckless policies both here and abroad, and that his grandfather would be appalled about Obama.

Cox's grandfather was President Richard M. Nixon, who has been widely acclaimed for some substantial foreign policy achievements, including breakthroughs with China and the Soviet Union, as well as ending the Vietnam War.

“He would be rolling over in his grave today if he saw how the Obama administration is conducting its foreign policy,” Cox told Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.

Cox is the tea party favorite in the New York GOP primary Tuesday for the state's 1st Congressional District, which covers much of eastern Long Island.

Obama's policies are bankrupting the United States, helping to push the economy deeper into a recession, Cox says.

“I totally [Obama's] oppose cap and trade because it’s a massive regressive tax on those who can least afford it,” Cox told Newsmax.TV. “It will hurt farmers and a lot of citizens in my district. I don’t think that’s a good thing to be doing in the middle of a recession.”

Cox is running against two other Republicans, Randy Altschuler and George Demos, in Tuesday’s primary. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Tim Bishop to represent the district.

Cox says he will push to renew the Bush tax cuts and also worries that Obama's plan to bring back the estate tax will harm small businesses and farmers.

“I support repealing the death tax permanently to help our family farms and small businesses,” he said.

Cox also strongly opposes the President Obama’s position that the Bush tax cuts should be extended only for those with an annual income of less than $200,000.

“It’s insane that we should be raising taxes in the middle of a recession,” he said. “Everyone knows that’s wrong. It’s a failed economic policy. We need to cut taxes and reduce the deficit to grow jobs, and that’s not what this administration is doing.”

New York state is shifting away from its traditional Democratic leaning, Cox says. “It definitely is changing. We elected the first member of a tea party to the New York State assembly in a special election in February,” he said.

“We’re picking up counties that used to be very blue, like Westchester. We are defeating incumbent county executives in these counties — Westchester, Nassau, places like that.”

That’s an indication that Republicans can make inroads in the suburbs. “We can win suburbs. We’ll win upstate. We can win elections for Republicans in New York state.”

Back on the international front, Cox says his grandfather would be appalled at how Obama is handling Iran’s attempt to build nuclear weapons.

“We can’t turn our backs on Israel and the U.K., who have been our great allies for so long,” he said.

President Nixon was a staunch supporter of the state of Israel. After several Arab states launched a surprise attack on the Jewish State on Yom Kippur in 1973, Nixon ordered the U.S. military to re-supply Israel, a critical factor in its victory.

Cox warned that President Obama is not taking the threat of nuclear Iran with equal seriousness.

How would Nixon have handled the Iran issue if he were in the Oval Office today?

“He’d use a mixture of diplomacy and the military to solve the problem. It’s unacceptable to have a nuclear Mideast,” Cox said.

“That wouldn’t be good for peace and security in the world and would certainly threaten our great ally Israel, who we have to defend.”
