implementation of the HDCP encryption/decryption algorithms. The code
includes the block cipher, stream cipher, and hashing algorithms
necessary to perform an HDCP handshake and to encrypt or decrypt video.
The code passes the test vectors provided in the HDCP specification and
can encrypt video at a rate of about 180 640x480 frames/second on a
2.33GHz Intel Xeon CPU. This isn't quite fast enough to decrypt 1080p
content in real-time on a single core, but decryption can be parallelized
across multiple cores. There are also many opportunities for further
optimisation, such as using SSE instructions. We are releasing the code
in hopes that others will further optimize it and use it in their
HDCP-related projects."

the speed and IO improvements and while initial versions will be

receive games free and ahead of time, but [0]Ars opens up a darker side
to the mystery box. Like a $200 check from Dante's Inferno, reading, 'by
cashing this check you succumb to avarice by hoarding filthy lucre, but
by not cashing it, you waste it, and thereby surrender to prodigality.'
Or how about a huge-ass sword from Darksiders. Or brass knuckles (illegal
in some states) from the makers of Mafia II. Or rancid, rotting meat
mixed with spent shell casings, teeth, broken glasses and dog tags from
Bulletstorm. NCSoft gave out flight suits and trips to weightlessness.
Nintendo apparently likes to send all manner of food, including elaborate
cakes shaped as their consoles and games. Squeeballs sent a crate of
stuffed animals. iPods from Activision and Zunes from Microsoft seem to
be pretty tame bait for reviewers ... but there's one reason why this
continues to happen: more news-starved review sites and blogs report on
the extras and the publisher's game gets spread around just a wee bit
more. Even if it is as freakish as bracelets from an insane asylum
spattered with blood." I think we must be doing it wrong around here...
we usually can't even get games before the release date, much less get
free rotting meat.

piracy is rampant in those countries where the online Android Market is

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

An anonymous reader writes "A new study has found that various state laws
that ban texting while driving [0]might actually make the roads more
dangerous. If that seems counterintuitive, it's the laws of unintended
consequences at work. The theory is that the laws don't do much to stop
people from texting while driving but instead, leads them to try to
hide the activity more. That is, they end up trying to text with the
phone held lower down to avoid it being detected. But, of course, that
also takes their eyes even further off the road. The study itself looked
at texting-related accidents both before and after 4 different states
implemented such laws, and also compared them to neighboring states with
no such laws. The results suggest the laws certainly don't help and in
some cases appeared to make the situation worse. So if the laws don't
work, what is a better solution to preventing texting while driving
accidents?"

An anonymous reader writes "The Supreme Court has agreed to hear an
important case to determine [0]whether or not AT&T deserves 'personal
privacy' rights. The company claimed that the FCC should not be allowed
to distribute (under a Freedom of Information Act request) data it had
collected concerning possible fraud and overbilling related to the e-rate
program. The FCC argued that the information should be made public and
that companies had no individual right to 'personal privacy,' the way
individuals do. As it stands right now, the appeals court found that
companies like AT&T do deserve personal privacy rights, and now the
Supreme Court will take up that question as well. Given the results of
earlier 'corporation rights' cases, such as Citizens United, at some
point you wonder if the Supreme Court will also give companies the right
to vote directly."

An anonymous reader writes "Despite the push by organizations such as
Google and Yahoo!, a recent study found [0]not everyone is a fan of
web-based customization for news. The researchers defined customization
as when the user gets to choose specific topics to read on a daily basis.
Instead, some prefer personalization. This is when the system chooses
content based on a reader's past choices. 'The obvious assumption is
people would like more control over what they read,' Sundar said. 'We
found when it came to evaluating new stories and quality of content,
customization was the preferred method for power users. If you were not a
power user, you wanted the system to tailor the news for you.'"

storagedude writes "Like something out of the Steven Spielberg movie
Minority Report, a startup called Social Intelligence is mining social
media to [0]weed out job applicants based on their potential for
violence, drug abuse or just plain bad judgment. The startup also combs
sites like Facebook and Twitter to monitor current employees, presumably
to monitor compliance with company social media policy, but as the
criteria are company-defined, anything's possible. Just one more reason
to watch what you post, folks."

With space tourism becoming a real possibility in the near future,
brewers are trying to figure out [0]how to provide a good beer in space.
To this end, a non-profit space research corporation Astronauts4Hire will
begin testing an Australian brew created to be enjoyed in microgravity.
From the article: "In the past, NASA has also sponsored studies on space
beer, and whether or not the popular beverage can be brewed in space.
Under current policies, however, alcohol remains forbidden on the
International Space Station."

[0]astroengine writes "An exoplanet, 20 to 50 percent the mass of Earth,
has been discovered 20 light-years away and it appears to [1]have all the
ingredients conducive to sustaining life. It has enough gravitational
clout to hold onto an atmosphere and it orbits well within the
'Goldilocks Zone' of its parent star. However, it would be a very
different place to Earth; it is tidally locked to its star, creating one
perpetual day on the world. Interestingly, this may also boost the
life-giving qualities of the exoplanet, creating stable temperatures in
its atmosphere."
