TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here's a look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

Campaign 2010 is entering the home stretch. President Obama today kicked off a western swing, campaigning for Democrats in the midterm election. That includes Sen. Patty Murray, who's in a tough battle for re-election with Republican Dino Rossi. Losing her seat could potentially cost the Democrats their majority in the Senate. CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Chip Reid reports on why the race is now a tossup in a traditionally blue state.

Later, in my series, American Voices, we'll hear from young voters. Polls show they're a lot less enthusiastic about voting than they were two years ago. But the ones who do plan to vote have serious concerns about jobs and college accessibility. Some even say, two years into the Obama administration, it's time for another change.

While we're on the subject of young people, there's been a pretty remarkable improvement in safety for teen drivers. The number of fatal crashes involving teenagers has fallen by a third in five years. What's behind it? CBS News National Correspondent Jim Axelrod has that story.

CBS News Foreign Correspondent Mandy Clark has a powerful report tonight from the frontlines in Afghanistan. She's with U.S. soldiers, as they press ahead in the battle for Kandahar, seen by many as the make-or-break battle of the war. U.S. commanders have emphasized the importance of protecting civilians. But in this battle, every threat is being met with overwhelming force, even if it puts the local population at risk. Mandy witnessed soldiers mistakenly attack a civilian family trying to flee the war zone. A must-see.

Finally, CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker reports on a couple that gives voice to forgotten generations of African-Americans. Their personal collection of artifacts--most from slaves-- has been on a 'round the country tour, finishing up at the Smithsonian. The collector, Bernard Kinsey, says black people have done so many things that nobody knows about. And he's determined to tell their stories.

See you tonight. Katie

A missing child is every parent's nightmare and this was no less true for Beverly McClendon. Last October when her 15-year-old daughter didn't respond to her cell phone, fearing the worst, she filed a missing persons report. What she found out was no less disturbing. Against her permission, her daughter was flown to New York to be a guest on the Tyra Banks show -- and even more horrifying -- the topic was sex addiction. Now one year later, Beverly has filed a lawsuit for $3 million dollars in compensatory and punitive damages with Tyra Banks her talk show and its distributor, Warner Brothers, alleging that her daughter's appearance could make her a target for sexual predators. In an Early Show Exclusive, Beverly McClendon, her daughter and their attorneys will tell you about the case and why they feel so passionate about winning the suit.
