TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here's a look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

Few Americans share the viewpoint of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas. Members of this obscure church have protested at military funerals, alleging that U.S. war deaths are God's punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality. But the question before the Supreme Court isn't whether their protests are offensive. They are. The issue is whether they have the right to voice that opinion. This is a landmark case that zeroes in on the outer limits of the First Amendment right to free speech. Chief Legal Correspondent Jan Crawford was at the high court for today's arguments.

The U.S. needs Pakistan's help to fight the war in Afghanistan. But the alliance has been frayed lately. The Pakistanis are upset over a U.S. helicopter attack in which several Pakistani soldiers were killed by mistake. Today, the U.S. apologized for the attack. Also today, in a major development, we got word that the Taliban leadership is reaching out to Afghanistan's government to start reconciliation talks. What does this mean for the U.S.? CBS News foreign correspondent, Terry McCarthy reports tonight from Kabul.

Less than four weeks until election day, we continue our look at some of the most important races in the battle for Congress. Tonight: CBS News correspondent, Ben Tracy is in Alaska to profile the strange Senate race. Incumbent Lisa Murkowski is running as an independent after losing the Republican primary to Tea Party candidate Joe Miller. Does she have a shot? And why has Sarah Palin--at one time a big supporter--cooled on Miller's candidacy? Tune in to find out.

Also tonight: a big mystery may be solved. Why are so many bees dying off? The loss of so many bees has huge ramifications for America's agriculture and flower industry. While we've been reporting on this for several years, tonight CBS News correspondent, John Blackstone will tell you why scientists may finally know what the problem is.

Finally, we rarely, if ever, use the term "miracle" when reporting on medical stories. But the term may fit in tonight's closing piece. A 12-year-old boy, born without ears, can finally hear, thanks to some amazing and complex surgery. CBS News correspondent, Bill Whitaker has the emotional story.

See you tonight. Katie

Here's an early look at one of the stories we are working on for Thursday night's broadcast of The CBS Evening News: You've heard from the polls, you've heard from the pundits. Now you'll hear what voters really think. . . Our special series American Voices begins Thursday night. You'll hear what some of the people in Cleveland, Ohio are thinking -- where I traveled to hear what they had to say about the issues and what may be likely to sway their vote on November 2nd. That story and more Thursday night, only on The CBS Evening News.

In a film career that has lasted over three decades, Academy-Award nominated actress Diane Lane has stared in such diverse films as The Perfect Storm, Under The Tuscan Sun, and Unfaithful. In her latest film, Secretariat, she plays, Penny Chenery Tweedy, a housewife who broke barriers, in what was then the all male field of race horses and trainers. In 1973, Secretariat became one of eleven horses in 92 years to take the Triple Crown -- arguably, he will go down as being one of the greatest there ever was. Lane will give you a sneak peek of the film which hits theaters this Friday. Even if you aren't a horse lover or a racing fan -- this true story will have you cheering and maybe even changing your plans for this weekend.
