[0]angry tapir writes "Toshiba is readying two 3D televisions that can
produce images with the illusion of depth but don't require the user to
wear glasses, the company said Monday. It will [1]launch the televisions
in Japan in December. Toshiba will offer a 12-inch model and a 20-inch
model. They'll cost around 120,000 (US$1,430) and 240,000 respectively.
Toshiba's new TVs have a thin sheet of small lenses in front of the
display. This splits light from the screen and sends it to nine points in
front of the TV."

An anonymous reader writes "The Advanced Concepts Team of the European
Space Agency is celebrating World Space Week (4-10 October 2010) with the
release of 'The Space Game,' an online game for interplanetary trajectory
design. The Space Game is an online crowdsourcing experiment where you
are given the role of a mission designer to [0]seek the best path to
travel through space. The interactive game, coded in HTML5, challenges
the players to devise fuel-efficient trajectories to various bodies of
the Solar System via a user-friendly interface. The aim of the experiment
is get people from all ages and backgrounds to come up with better
strategies that can help improve the effectiveness of the current
computer algorithms. As part of the events organized worldwide for Space
Week, the first problem of the game is to reach Jupiter with the lowest
amount of propellant. The best scores by 10 October will be displayed on
the Advanced Concepts Team website and the three best designs will also
receive some ESA prizes."

theodp writes "A day after Google [0]debuted its new Google TV website,
the USPTO issued U.S. Patent No. 7,806,329 to the search giant for its

proposes having viewers take 5-10 minutes to 'fill out a consumer survey

survey before starting the program' to avoid having to watch 10 minutes
of commercials. 'As another alternative,' the patent continues, 'the
broadcaster may offer the users an option to pay $2 (such as through a
micro-payment system, such as GBuy) to exchange for skipping all
commercials.' More from the patent: 'The system may allow a user to skip
all of the promotions that they want to skip, but may also require the
user to fully watch at least four promotions before the program will
continue. Likewise, the system may require the user to follow activities
that generate a certain amount of advertising revenue or advertising
points (e.g., that may correspond directly or indirectly to advertising
revenues) before the program will continue.'"

Graphene is a novel one-atom-thick lattice state of carbon which has

derive in part from the 2-dimensional nature of the material: quantum
interactions are constrained to the effectively planar dimension of the
lattice. Graphene holds promise for physical applications including touch

eldavojohn writes "Over the weekend, the whistle blowing site Cryptome
was [0]hacked and vandalized this weekend resulting in all 54,000 files
being deleted and two days worth of submissions lost. Cryptome reported
that it's EarthLink e-mail account was compromised in ways unknown and
once the attacker was inside there, they were able to request a new
password from the administration console for Cryptome at their hosting
provider, Network Solutions (NSI). Once the attacker had that password,
they deleted the ~7 GB of data that Cryptome hosted in around 54,000
files. Cryptome was able to eventually restore the site as they keep
backups ready for cases like this and stated that they 'do not trust our
ISP, email provider and officials to tell the truth or protect us.'"

An anonymous reader writes "Oliver Drage, 19, of Liverpool has been
convicted of 'failing to disclose an encryption key,' which is an offense

has been [1]jailed for 16 weeks. Police seized his computer but could not
get past the 50-character encrypted password that he refused to give up.
And just to get it out of the way, [2]obligatory XKCD."

Fortran IV writes "Back in June, Washington, D.C. signed up with the
[0]The Open Source Digital Foundation to set up an internet voting system
for D.C. residents overseas. The plan was to have the system operational
by the November general election. Last week the D.C. Board of Elections
and Ethics opened the system for testing and attracted the attention of
students at the University of Michigan, [1]with [2]comical [3]results.
The D.C. Board has postponed implementation of the system for 'more
robust testing.'" Update: 10/06 02:42 GMT by [4]T : University of
Michigan computer scientist J. Alex Halderman provides an explanation of
[5]exactly how the folks at Michigan exploited the D.C. system.
