| Pixel Qi Demos 10" 1280x800 Pixel Screens

Compared to their dumber e-ink cousins, tablets with LCD screens suffer
at least two notable disadvantages: their batteries last hours or days,
rather than [0]weeks (or months), and they're notoriously hard to read in
the sunshine. Neither of these problems are likely to be licked soon, but
the gap may be shrinking: Mary Lou Jepsen's OLPC spinoff Pixel Qi [1]has
now shown off a 10", 1280x800 panel. Pixel Qi's screens are well-known,
though not currently widely adopted, for their ability to run in a
high-contrast, low-power greyscale mode as well as a still-frugal color
mode. Though the company is currently showing prototypes rather than a
shipping version of the new high-resolution screens, it's reason to renew
hope for a long-lived color-screen tablet that's comfortable in the
sunlight.

CWmike writes "Apple released an update for Snow Leopard on Tuesday that
[0]warns users that they've downloaded fake Mac security software and
scrubs already-infected machines. Chet Wisniewski, a security researcher
with Sophos, confirmed that the update alerts users when they try to
download any of [1]the bogus MacDefender antivirus software. Wisniewski
had not yet tested the malware cleaning functionality of the update, but
was confident that it would work. 'It's reasonably trivial to remove
MacDefender,' said Wisniewski. 'It's not burying itself in the system,
not compared to some of some of the crap that we see on Windows.' The
update, [2]labeled 2011-003, adds a new definition to [3]the rudimentary
antivirus detection engine embedded in Mac OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard,
and also increases the frequency with which the operating system checks
for new definitions to daily."

J. Dzhugashvili writes "We've seen some [0]solid-state drives on PCI
Express cards before, but OCZ's RevoDrive Hybrid may very well be the
first solution to [1]combine solid-state storage and a mechanical hard
drive on a single PCI Express x4 card. Using Dataplex caching software
from Nvelo, the RevoDrive Hybrid uses its solid-state component (a RAID 0
array of SandForce-based SSDs) as a cache for an onboard mechanical hard
drive. The caching scheme is reportedly so effective that "a 5,400-RPM
drive can be used without sacrificing much performance," according to The
Tech Report's coverage. OCZ hasn't hashed out all of the details yet, but
it expects the RevoDrive Hybrid to start at $350 this July. The base
configuration should couple 60GB of solid-state storage with a 500GB
mechanical drive."

Jackson Games, then owner of the Illuminati Online BBS and later the

However, this most recent sale, to an unnamed party, will result in all
services being dropped on July 1, and people will lose email addresses,

of apps in the Android Market that have been infected with the DroidDream
malware, estimating that upwards of 30,000 users have downloaded at least

phone, including its IMEI number, IMSI number, packages installed and
other data, and then sends it off to a pre-configured remote server."

An anonymous reader writes "In the latest column from scientist, humor
columnist, and stand-up comedian Adam Ruben, he examines his own
umbilicus and considers how being a scientist will affect his approach to
[0]raising his only slightly post-fetal child. From the article: 'I don't
know how other prospective fathers treat their wives' pregnancies, but I
saw it as a science project. It had a protocol, parameters, a timeline,
and even the one item that makes funding agencies happy: a deliverable. I
found myself poking at my wife's abdomen, asking, "Who's Daddy's little
gestating blastocyst? Who's recapitulating phylogeny?"'"

about science not from a PowerPoint presentation but by watching it
firsthand. [0]The World Science Festival is taking over New York City
from June 1 to 5, bringing together scientists, celebrities, researchers

fourth year, the fledgling festival has turned into a seasoned veteran,
attracting over 185,000 attendants last year, and the festival creators
expect the numbers to be even more impressive this year."

| Why We Have So Much "Duh" Science

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Eryn Brown writes in the LA Times that accounts
of 'duh' research abound as studies show that driving ability worsens in
people with early Alzheimer's disease, that women who get epidurals
experience less pain during childbirth than women who don't, that young
men who are obese have lower odds of getting married than thinner peers,
and that making exercise more fun might improve fitness among teens. But
there's more to duh research than meets the eye writes Brown as experts
say they [1]have to prove the obvious again and again to influence
perceptions and policy. 'Think about the number of studies that had to be
published for people to realize smoking is bad for you,' says Ronald J.
Iannotti, a psychologist at the National Institutes of Health. '[2]There
are some subjects where it seems you can never publish enough.' Kyle
Stanford, a professor of the philosophy of science at UC Irvine, thinks
the professionalization of science has led researchers who must win
grants to pay their bills to ask timid questions and research that hews
to established theories is more likely to be funded, even if it
contributes little to knowledge. Perhaps most important, sometimes [3]a
study that seems poised to affirm the conventional wisdom produces a
surprise. 'Many have taken the value of popular programs like DARE in
which police warn kids about the dangers of drug use as an article of
faith,' writes Brown. 'But Dennis Rosenbaum of the University of Illinois
at Chicago and other researchers have shown that [4]the program has been
ineffective and may even increase drug use in some cases.'"

ClientNine writes "California could collect more than [0]$1 billion a
year by taxing Amazon and other online retailers if a bill approved by
the Assembly becomes law. Assemblyman Charles Calderon, a Democrat from
Whittier, says his legislation doesn't impose a new sales tax, but
extends one that California should already have been enforcing. AB155
passed, 47-16, with the support of one GOP lawmaker Tuesday. It now heads
to the Senate. Other Republicans rejected the bill because they said it
would invite lawsuits, drive business out of California, and get the
state entangled in the messy task of regulating the Internet."
