Several readers have written with word of a new doorbell, invented by
13-year-old Laurence Rook. What's so special about a doorbell? This one
lets you answer the door [0]from wherever you can receive a call from its
embedded 3G chip; to your in-person caller (facing the doorbell), that
means it sounds like you're answering the door over an intercom system,
even if you're really across town. Pretty clever way to make it harder
for a thief to know if a home is actually occupied, though Rook says that
he initially just wanted a system to avoid missed packages.

Ars Technica has posted an absorbing article about the [0]short history
of Internet and cell-phone access for passengers aboard commercial
airplanes, which does a lot to sate my curiosity about the factors
holding it back, and gives some ideas about what to look forward to. An
excerpt: "Despite the volume of equipped aircraft, we're still in the
early days and the continued availability of mile-high WiFi is certainly
not guaranteed. It's an expensive, long-term investment to supply
consistent and usable broadband Internet service at 35,000 feet. Surveys
show people want access, but it's unclear how much (or even if) they'll
pay for it. Aircell says that 20 percent of passengers on equipped
cross-country flights use its service, but it's mum about numbers on
shorter segments."

alphadogg writes "When Nobel Prizes are dished out each fall, the most
accomplished [0]professionals in computing, telecom and IT have usually
been left out in the cold. That's because there is no Nobel Prize for
these fields, and it's unlikely there will be one any time soon.
According to the Nobel Foundation: 'The Nobel Prizes, as designated in
the Will of Alfred Nobel, are in physics, chemistry, physiology or
medicine, literature and peace. Only once has a prize been added a
Memorial Prize The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in
Memory of Alfred Nobel, donated by Sweden's central bank to celebrate its
tercentenary in 1968. The Nobel Foundation's Board of Directors later
decided to keep the original five prizes intact and not to permit new
additions.' So, if IBM, Google, Apple or some other deep-pocketed tech
company wanted to make a big donation along the lines of what Sweden's
central bank did in 1968, maybe it could sway the Nobel Foundation to add
a prize. But it most likely wouldn't be officially called a Nobel Prize."

official Beijing newspaper said on Monday, warning that the US internet

indicating that political tensions between the United States and China
over Internet security could linger. Last week, Google said it had broken
up an effort to steal the passwords of hundreds of Google email account

| 25% of US Hackers Are FBI/CIA Informers

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader writes "The Guardian reports that the FBI and CIA
have [0]'persuaded' up to 25% of US hackers to 'work' for them. 'In some
cases, popular illegal forums used by cyber criminals as marketplaces for
stolen identities and credit card numbers have been run by hacker
turncoats acting as FBI moles. In others, undercover FBI agents posing as
"carders" hackers specialising in ID theft have themselves taken over
the management of crime forums, using the intelligence gathered to put
dozens of people behind bars. ... The best-known example of the
phenomenon is Adrian Lamo, a convicted hacker who turned informant on
Bradley Manning, who is suspected of passing secret documents to
WikiLeaks.' What implications does this hold for privacy? Or is it just
good work by the authorities?" As you may have guessed, the estimate
appears to be based only on the number of black hats, rather than all
hackers.

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader sends this from the MIT News office: "[0]A radically
new approach to the design of batteries, developed by researchers at MIT,
could provide a lightweight and inexpensive alternative to existing
batteries for electric vehicles and the power grid. The technology could
even make 'refueling' such batteries as quick and easy as pumping gas
into a conventional car ([1]abstract). The new battery relies on an
innovative architecture called a semi-solid flow cell, in which solid
particles are suspended in a carrier liquid and pumped through the
system. In this design, the batterys active components the positive
and negative electrodes, or cathodes and anodes are composed of
particles suspended in a liquid electrolyte. These two different
suspensions are pumped through systems separated by a filter, such as a
thin porous membrane."

[0]snydeq writes "Deep End's Paul Venezia discusses [1]the two ways to
succeed in IT: through proficiency and hard work, a road that often
[2]leads to unending servitude, or the other way; with little effort or
proficiency at all. 'I hate to say this, but a number of people in IT
positions work harder to make it seem like they're busy as beavers than
doing actual work. Quite often this dysfunction starts at the top: When
an IT manager doesn't know the technology very well, he or she may hire
folks who have no idea what their job is other than to show up every day
and answer the occasional email, passing questions along to others with
more technical abilities, or to their contacts at the various hardware
and software vendors. People like these populate many consulting
companies. They rely almost completely on contractors to perform the
actual work, serving as remote hands in a real crisis and as part of a
phone tree for less pressing issues.'"

and I'd like to know what Slashdotters thought would be the best set of
adventure games to start her on (PC preferred). Nothing too scary yet, so
unfortunately, Diablo is out for the time being. I'd prefer one with
multi-player so that we could quest together on ocassion."
