aabelro writes "Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! have decided to [0]propose a
common markup vocabulary, [1]Schema.org, based on the Microdata format,
simplifying the job of webmasters who want to [2]give meaning to their
web pages' content." Manu Sporny, chair of the W3C group that created
[3]RDFa, added his (personal) dissenting opinion about Schema, [4]calling
it a 'false choice,' and saying, "The entire Web community should decide

"Eye scanners and futuristic security tunnels may be standard in airports

hassles of boarding a plane that deter some people from flying. The
International Air Transport Association unveiled a mock-up Tuesday in
Singapore of what it dubbed the '[1]Checkpoint of the Future,' where
passengers separated by security risk would walk through one of three
high-tech, 20-foot-long (6.1-meters-long) tunnels that can quickly scan
shoes and carry-on luggage and check for liquids and explosives. ... In
the IATA prototype, passengers would be categorized based on the results
of a government risk assessment that is put into a chip in a passenger's

BertieBaggio writes "I am a medical student at the end of an academic
year trying to get my notes organised. I'm looking for a software
document organisation system to organise a mix of text notes, journal
articles, diagrams and scans. Ideally such a system would permit
full-text and metadata search, multiple categorisations (eg tags),
preserve the underlying files and be cross-platform (Linux/Windows/OS X).
While I'm not averse to paying for such a complex solution, ideally the
software would be FOSS so that extension or migration are possible if
necessary. Desktop search (eg Google Desktop) probably does 90% of what I
want apart from multiple categorisations, which is the feature I'm most
interested in. Searching turned up a similar question over at 43folders
which pointed me in the direction of Papers and DevonThink, but these are
OS X only and seem to be aimed more at academic paper organisation. What
recommendations does the Slashdot community have for categorising and
organising a heterogeneous mix of files?"

before in actual photos: [1]the sight of a space shuttle berthed at the
International Space Station. This view of shuttle Endeavour, taken by
Italian astronaut Paulo Nespoli from aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule on
May 23, is the culmination of 36 space shuttle missions to build the
outpost over the past 12 years. NASA wanted the shot before it retires
the shuttle fleet after one final mission in July."

[0]CWmike writes "A new document in a year-old [1]patent lawsuit filed by
Oracle against Google over Android intellectual property suggests Oracle
could be seeking huge damages from Google. The damages owed to Oracle, if
granted by federal Judge William Alsup for the US District Court for
Northern California, [2]would 'far exceed any money Google has ever
earned with Android' and could lead to a rewrite of Android's Dalvik
virtual machine, considered integral to Android and used by Android
device manufacturers and potentially thousands of Android app developers,
[3]wrote one blogger, Florian Mueller, who writes about intellectual
property issues involving the software industry."

[0]itwbennett writes "Are you a SQL expert? Check out apartments in

demand in the fastest-growing US IT job markets and finds that
[1]different cities want different kinds of techies." This reminds me of
the recent book [2] Who's Your City? Considering how many people of all
stripes live in any large city, and how much migration goes on for work,
school, or other reason (I'm thinking of a few I've lived in, like
Austin, Seattle, and Philadelphia), it amazes me how strong are the
differences in social atmosphere between cities.

Endoflow2010 sends word of [0]an enormous eruption that occurred on the
Sun this morning. Phil Plait describes it thus: "What youre seeing here
is a solar flare (an enormous explosion of pent-up magnetic energy)
coupled with a prominence (a physical eruption of gas from the surface).
This event blasted something like a billion tons of material away from
the Sun. Note the size of it, too: while it started from a small region
on the Suns surface, it quickly expanded into a plume easily as big as
the Sun itself! Id estimate its size at well over a million kilometers
across." The attached video is well worth watching.
