schwit1 writes with this quote from the Chronicle of Higher Education:
"For 10 years, Lawrence Golan has been quietly waging a legal campaign to
overturn a statute which makes it impossibly expensive for smaller
orchestras to play certain pieces of music. Now the case is heading to
the US Supreme Court. The high-stakes copyright showdown affects far more
than sheet music. The outcome [0]will touch a broad swath of academe for
years to come, dictating what materials scholars can use in books and
courses without jumping through legal hoops. The law Mr. Golan is trying
to overturn has also hobbled libraries' efforts to digitize and share
books, films, and music. The conductor's fight centers on the concept of
the public domain, which scholars depend on for teaching and research.
When a work enters the public domain, anyone can quote from it, copy it,
share it, or republish it without seeking permission or paying royalties.
The dispute that led to Golan v. Holder dates to 1994, when Congress
passed a law that moved vast amounts of material from the public domain
back behind the firewall of copyright protection. The Supreme Court is
expected to decide the case during the term that begins in October."

interoperability makes it easier than ever for developers and designers
to enrich the toolkit. W3C expects future additions to CSS to be
organized as independent modules, allowing smaller, more focused feature
sets to progress and stabilize at their own pace. Some of these new
features are already supported in browsers and other software in draft
form (using the built-in CSS prefix mechanism designed for
experimentation). As interoperability improves for each one, developers
can transition to the standard to simplify their code. The CSS Working
Group also publishes snapshots of which CSS features are supported
interoperably in browsers; see, for instance, [2]the most recent CSS

Vita portable console ([1]hands-on report), but they also made a stronger
push into the 3D space, revealing a 24" display specifically designed for
3D gaming. Most notable about this display is that two players wearing 3D
glasses can use it to view separate images on screen. This means that
when playing with a friend, [2]you need not sacrifice 50% of screen real
estate to accommodate the other player. The Guardian has a good run-down

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Government ministers and officials from the
European Union countries who met to discuss atomic energy safety have
agreed to [1]carry out stress tests on nuclear reactors to test their
capacity to withstand major incidents like the earthquake and tsunami
that rocked the Fukushima plant in March. 'The accident at Fukushima in
Japan has affected us all,' says French Environment Minister Nathalie

lessons from the accident and to improve and raise our standards and ways
of cooperating on nuclear safety.' The stress tests will be performed on
Europe's 143 working reactors and other atomic installations. 'You have

task force that investigated the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in
1979, and an organizer of the group issuing the letter. 'You have to take

restrictions, citing the infamous case of Amazon wiping copies of George

that I sometimes get other people's email at my
firstname.lastname@gmail.com account. It isn't a big deal if it is a
person; I let them know, they fix it. The big problem I am having is with
companies and websites. These emails are often no-reply, which means I
can't send back a quick note. I got someone's credit card bills for three
months before I realized there was nothing for it but calling the company
(I tried a couple of emails first). Recently I got a notice about
someone's kid signing up for a website. I don't have any option but to
hit the response button, and tell them that I first have to say I am that
kid's parent or guardian. I didn't know where to go from there. Today I
get an invoice from a cable company; it is for a different state. I can't
reply. I go to the online support, they tell me my only choice is to call
the sales office. I gave in for the bank, but I am not talking to someone
else's cable company. Is there any way to make emails to an improperly
formatted gmail address bounce or do something else obvious? Is there a
technical solution I am overlooking. I doesn't happen that often but it
is an increasing PITA with no-reply email addresses. I hate just setting
up a filter because that cuts off these other people who made a typo or
had someone not enter something correctly, but it is looking like the
best choice. It isn't spam, but it isn't my meat."

hardware prowess. Sure, it's churned out plenty of nice mice, keyboards,
and game controllers over the years, but success with actual devices has
been mixed. The Xbox 360 has exceeded all expectations, while the Zune
and Kin hardware have been monumental failures. According to industry
sources in Taiwan, however, [0]Microsoft is working on a Windows 8 tablet
that will be powered by Texas Instrument's next-generation 1.8GHz dual
core processor."

[0]mdsolar writes "In the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in
Japan, [German Chancellor] Merkel announced that her country would
[1]close all of its 17 existing reactors by 2022. Other nations,
including Japan, Italy, and Switzerland, have announced plans to pare
back nuclear power, but none have gone as far as Germany, the world's
fourth-largest economy. Merkel vows to replace nuclear power with
alternatives that do not increase greenhouse gases or shackle the
economic growth. [2]Could the US do the same? An increasing number of
reports suggest it is not beyond the realm of possibility, and Germany

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]CWmike writes "A former student at a suburban Philadelphia high school
has [1]sued his school district for allegedly spying on him and his
family using a school-issued Mac laptop, according to court documents.
The Lower Merion School District of Ardmore, Pa. was first sued in
February 2010 by another student using similar charges. That case, dubbed
'Spygate' in some reports, was settled last October when Lower Merion
agreed to pay Blake Robbins $175,000 and cover $425,000 in court costs.
On Monday, Joshua Levin, a 2009 graduate of Herriton High, charged the
district with violating his civil rights and privacy by remotely
activating the notebook's built-in camera to take photographs and
screenshots. On Wednesday, Lower Merion spokesman Doug Young called
Levin's lawsuit 'solely motivated by monetary interests and a complete
waste of the taxpayer's dollars.' Levin begged to differ. According to
his lawsuit, Lower Merion used his laptop to take more than 8,000
photographs and screenshots between September 2008 and March 2009. A
district report uncovered more than 30,000 photographs and 27,000
screenshots taken. Last June, lawyers [2]made photos and screenshots
available for viewing by the 76 affected students. 'Plaintiff opted to
view the recovered images, and was shocked, humiliated and severely
emotionally distressed at what he saw,' Levin's lawsuit stated."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Pulitzer prize winning writer Thomas Friedman
writes that in few years we may be looking back at the first decade of
the 21st century when food prices spiked, energy prices soared, world
population surged, tornados plowed through cities, floods and droughts
set records, populations were displaced and governments were threatened
by the confluence of it all and ask ourselves: [1]What were we
thinking? 'We're currently caught in two loops,' writes Friedman. 'One is
that more population growth and more global warming together are pushing
up food prices; rising food prices cause political instability in the
Middle East, which leads to higher oil prices, which leads to higher food
prices, which leads to more instability.' According to the Global
Footprint Network we are currently growing at a rate that is [2]using up
the Earth's resources far faster than they can be sustainably replenished,
so we are eating into the future. Right now, global growth is using about
1.5 Earths. 'Having only one planet makes this a rather significant
problem,' says Paul Gilding. 'We either allow collapse to overtake us or
develop a new sustainable economic model. We will choose the latter. We
may be slow, but we're not stupid.'"
