[0]Rambo Tribble writes "CNN is running an article detailing [1]the
dubious history of Eric Lefkofsky, Groupon's chairman and largest
shareholder. It would seem Mr. Lefkofsky has an extensive history of
taking investors' money for himself, then bankrupting the businesses
invested in." Another article posted today at TechCrunch explores one
businesswoman's story of how working with Groupon was [2]the single worst
business decision she ever made.

[0]Unlike the CDC, a freedom of information request submitted to the
Leicester City Council has revealed that the council is not prepared for
an [1]unexpected zombie invasion. From the article: "'We've had a few
wacky ones before but this one did make us laugh,' said Lynn Wyeth, head
of information governance. The Freedom of Information Act allows a right

said she was unaware of any specific reference to a zombie attack in the

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Not content with building [1]their own submarines,
using bazookas, rocket-propelled grenades or land mines, [2]drug cartels
are now building armored assault vehicles, complete with gun turrets,
inch-thick armor plates, firing ports and bulletproof glass. The monsters
look like a cross between a handmade assault vehicle used by a Somali
warlord and something out of a post-apocalyptic Mad Max movie, and have
already appeared in several confrontations with Mexican authorities. A
[3]look inside a captured 'monster' truck (YouTube video) reveals that in
addition to swiveling turrets to shoot in any direction, they have
hatches and peepholes for snipers, their spacious interiors can fit as
many as 20 armed men, and they are coated with polyurethane for
insulation and to reduce noise. Still Patrick Corcoran writes that the
armored vehicles are not a game changer. 'While the "narco-tanks," as the
vehicles are often called, make for great blog fodder and provide
entertaining videos, [4]seeing their rise as a significant escalation in
Mexico's drug war would be wrongheaded,' writes Corcoran. 'In the end,
the "tanks" are a sexy narrative, but these mistaken notions about the
criminals' "military might" not only inflate the power of Mexico's groups
far beyond any reasonable assessment, they also obscure the problem, and
its potential solutions.'"

mschaffer writes "A computer glitch Friday night [0]snarled the travel
plans of US Airways customers, as reports flooded in of flights grounded
around the country." As someone stranded for several hours yesterday by
this outage, "glitch" seems like quite a euphemism. With outgoing flights
blocked, and new ones arriving full of passengers expecting to meet
connections, the atmosphere got a little heated. Customers could see nice
weather, and planes lined up outside, but "The System Is Down" trumps
all. The E concourse at Charlotte (a US Airways hub) was packed full of
customers ranging from livid (a handful) to merely angry (most) to calmly
resigned which means those of us with seats, snacks, and books or
computers. It was disheartening to see how brittle is the infrastructure
the airline employs; with the part of the system visible to airline
employees down, customers thought they might get more information, or
even rebooking, through the US Airways website. But that was down, too,
and all the desk staff could do is shrug.

AffidavitDonda writes with news that University of Warwick and University
of British Columbia researchers have "identified the gene for breaking
down lignin [0]in a soil-living bacterium called Rhodococcus jostii.
Although such enzymes have been found before in fungi, this is the first
time that they have been identified in bacteria. The bacterium's genome
has already been sequenced which means that it could be modified more
easily to produce large amounts of the required enzyme. In addition,
bacteria are quick and easy to grow, so this research raises the prospect
of producing enzymes which can break down lignin on an industrial scale.
By making woody plants and the inedible by-products of crops economically
viable the eventual hope is to be able to produce biofuels that don't
compete with food production."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Ever been annoyed during that nail-biting
darkened hallway scene by someone turning on their phone to send a text?
Well, [1]don't mess with Texas or you may end up on the screen in a
public service announcement. Alamo Drafthouse, a local chain of
dine-and-screen movie theaters in Austin, Texas, has long waged a war
against impolite moviegoers booting out customers who talk or text during
performances. Phoebe Connelly writes that according to Tim League, the
Drafthouse's founder, a [2]woman was recently warned twice about texting
during a screening, and then, in accordance with company policy, was
escorted out without a refund. 'I don't think people realize that it is
distracting,' says League. 'It seems like nothing, but if you spend as
much time as I do at the movies, you realize the entire theater sees it
and it pulls you out of the movie experience. It's every bit as intrusive
as talking.' The irate customer called up the Alamo Drafthouse and left a
profanity-laced (and perhaps slightly inebriated) message decrying the
theater's policies, but the theater got the last laugh as they [3]took
the audio of the woman's voicemail, transcribed it, and turned it into an
in-house preview [tl: Note, YouTube video contains some profanity] that
warns theatergoers against cell phone use during movies. 'Part of what
we're trying to do is have a comedic message about what to us is a very
serious issue,' says League, declining to give any more details about the
woman at the center of the recent PSA."

Verdatum writes "Entertainment Weekly is one of many sites reporting the
strong [0]negative reaction from users of the new Netflix web interface.
The new interface presents larger title images at the cost of visible
ratings and the 'Sortable List' view. To see a suggested rating or view
details, one must now first hover over each individual title. Netflix
announced the new interface on Wednesday, in an [1]official blog post. So
far, the post has received thousands of negative comments, but only a few
dozen comments by users believing the change is an improvement."

capedgirardeau writes with a clipping from the AP about engineer Ken
Yankelevitz: "[W]ith the retired Bozeman engineer's 70th birthday
approaching, disabled gamers say they fear there will be no one to
replace Yankelevitz, who has [0]sustained quadriplegic game controllers
for 30 years almost entirely by himself. The retired aerospace engineer
hand makes the controllers with custom parts in his Montana workshop,
offering them at a price just enough to cover parts." [1]Yankelevitz
builds interfaces to control an Xbox 360 or PlayStation.
