All of the data generated in your IT infrastructure is seriously valuable.
Why? It contains a definitive record of application performance, security
threats, fraudulent activity, and more. Splunk takes this data and makes
sense of it. IT sense. And common sense.

An anonymous reader writes "Barnes & Nobles' latest e-reader has already
been hacked. In a couple of surprise videos this morning, the hacker
zoryl showed the Nook Touch [0]running the Kindle app and running ADW
Launcher. the second video also [1]hints at the presence of Bluetooth."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader links to an [0]exhaustive look at the latest Ubuntu,
running at Tom's Hardware. "The new Unity interface is broken down into
its individual elements and explained ad nauseam. Overall the article is
objectively balanced, the author does a good job of pointing out specific
design flaws and shortcomings instead of complaining about how Unity
doesn't work for him specifically. The walkthrough of the uTouch gesture
language is exciting (wish I had multi-touch), though a full listing of
keyboard and mouse shortcuts come in handy, too. Towards the end of the
article there are benchmarks between Lucid, Natty with Unity, and Natty
with the Classic interface. The performance of the Unity interface isn't
bad at all, but that kernel power issue does rear its ugly head."

[0]DotNM writes "CityNews and other media outlets are reporting that the
[1]International Monetary Fund has been hit by a 'cyber attack.' They are
withholding most of the details; however, it is known that the World Bank
has shut down a 'link' between them and the IMF." Adds reader Hugh
Pickens, "A cyber security expert told Reuters the infiltration had been
a targeted attack, which installed software [2]designed to give a nation
state a 'digital insider presence' at the IMF. 'The code was developed
and released for this purpose,' said Tom Kellerman, who has worked for
the Fund. Bloomberg quoted an unnamed security expert as saying the
[3]hackers were connected to a foreign government however, such attacks
are very difficult to trace."

daria42 writes "PayPal has long been one of the most-used payments option
on the Internet; its history serving eBay's millions of users has now
expanded into a wider remit across many e-commerce sites. But will the
company ever become a valid option for point of sale payments at actual
[0]physical retail stores? Yes, according to PayPal's global president
Scott Thompson and PayPal's working on that right now, with one option
based on mobile phones on the way and two others in development. It'll be

I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be using such a system."

theodp writes "Slate's Michael Agger wishes there was a website his
6-year-old son could visit on his own to watch amateur Star Wars Lego
movies and other stuff he's curious about. 'But I don't leave him alone
on YouTube,' he laments, 'because I never know if some strange-ass video
will appear in the 'Related Videos' section.' Agger suggests that
[0]Google should create Google Kids, a search engine that filters the Web
for children. 'Think back to when you were a kid and your parents dropped
you off at the library,' explains Agger. 'In the children's section, the
only "inappropriate" stuff to be found was Judy Blume's Forever, which
someone's older sister had usually already checked out anyway. Similarly,
Google Kids would be a sort of children's section of the Web, focused on
providing high-quality results based on age.'"
