far more granularity to medical diagnosis and treatment. For example,
ICD-9 has one code for a finger amputation. In contrast, ICD-10 has a
code for every finger and every section of every finger. An 'unfunded
mandate,' the change over to ICD-10 codes is a multi-year project for
hospitals, state Medicaid organizations, and insurance providers. The
effort, which affects dozens of core systems, is taxing IT operational
budgets at a time when shops are already under the gun to implement
electronic health records."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Bitcoin," says [0]the project's website, "is a peer-to-peer currency.
Peer-to-peer means that no central authority issues new money or tracks
transactions." Wikipedia offers a readable explanation of the
[1]underlying technology. In (very) short, Bitcoin uses a distributed
database and public key encryption to allow users to reassign ownership
of units of Bitcoin currency (BTC), and does so in a way that can keep
the user's identity private. Bitcoin isn't yet accepted the way credit
cards are, but it's [2]more than theoretical. You can buy (some) things
with Bitcoin, and [3]trade the currency itself. Now, you can ask question
about Bitcoin of Amir Taaki, a developer of client interfaces and stock
trading software for Bitcoin, and owner and operator of trading exchange
[4]Britcoin.co.uk. Amir requests that questions focus not "so much on the
mining (too many people get focused on that when it's a minor aspect of
Bitcoin) nor simple technical questions (people can go find that info
themselves on Wikipedia/the forums/sourcecode)," but rather on the
harder-to-answer questions. Reading some of the related stories listed
below may give you ideas on what those are. Standard [5]Slashdot
Interview rules apply: ask as many questions as you want, but please keep
them to one per comment. Amir will get back with his answers.

numbers. It allowed them to leapfrog into the accounts of other
customers, with an automatic computer program letting them repeat the
trick tens of thousands of times."

| Programming Is Heading Back To School

[0]the agent man writes "Researchers at the University of Colorado at
Boulder are exploring what it takes to [1]systematically get programming
back to public schools. They have created a game-design-based curriculum,
called [2]Scalable Game Design, using the AgentSheets computational
thinking tool. Annual summer institutes train middle school teachers from
around the USA to teach their students computational thinking through
game design and computational science simulations. What's truly unique
about this is that it is not an after-school program; it takes place
during regular school courses. Entire school districts are participating
with measurable impacts, increasing the participation of women in high
school CS courses from 2% six years ago to 38-59% now. Educators would
like to be able to ask students, 'Now that you can make Space Invaders,
can you also make a science simulation?' To explore this difficult
question of transfer, the researchers devised new mechanisms to compute
computational thinking. They analyze every game submitted by students to
extract computational thinking patterns and to see if students can
transfer these skills to creating science simulations."

Orome1 writes "The problem of poor passwords is not confined to computer
use, and that fact was illustrated by an app developer who has added code
to capture user passcodes to one of its applications. 'Because Big
Brother's [the app in question] passcode setup screen and lock screen are
nearly identical to those of the actual iPhone passcode lock, I figured
that the collected information would closely correlate with actual iPhone
passcodes,' says Daniel Amitay. It turns out that of the 204,508 recorded
passcodes, [0]15% were one of the most common ten."
