Kulchenko today announced that he's sold his startup, a cloud-based

[0]CWmike writes "Recent break-ins at [1]high-profile targets like the
International Monetary Fund [2]demonstrate just how proficient hackers
have become at so-called spear phishing, researchers said on Tuesday.
'Today's spear phishing is not only more prevalent but also much more
technically proficient,' said Dave Jevans, chairman of the Anti-Phishing
Working Group. 'They're not going for a password, anymore; they're
getting people to install crimeware on their computers.' The trend
highlights the need for defenses against such targeted threats, requiring
companies to [3]look beyond security strategies focused purely on dealing
with traditional network threats, analysts said. Increasingly, companies
also need to focus on approaches such as continuous monitoring of
networks, databases, applications and users, outbound traffic filtering
and whitelisting."

An anonymous reader tips a Tech Report article laying out [0]ten sacred
conventions of PC gaming. Quoting: "VI. Keep thine configurations options
exposed. PC gamers are used to being able to configure things. That comes
from both necessity and whim, and while one doesn't necessarily need to
cater to the latter, the former is a must. Games don't have to expose a
1000-line menu for every conceivable detail level on the torches of King
Whatever's castle entrance, but we'd like at least some amount of
granularity. ... X. Honor thine modders and mod communities. Not every
game benefits from mod support, mind you. When they do and the tools
exist, however, the result is almost invariably a much bigger and more
pervasive community (especially on the multiplayer front). That, in turn,
leads to a constant stream of sales. It truly is a win-win situation."

thinkers have assumed that the uniquely human capacity for reasoning has
existed to let people reach beyond mere perception and reflex in the
search for truth. Rationality allowed a solitary thinker to blaze a path
to philosophical, moral and scientific enlightenment. Now some
researchers are suggesting that [1]reason evolved for a completely
different purpose: to win arguments. Rationality, by this yardstick (and
irrationality too, but we'll get to that) is nothing more or less than a
servant of the hard-wired compulsion to triumph in the debating arena."

[0]Barence writes "With a seemingly continuous wave of attacks hitting
the public and commercial sectors, [1]there has never been a more
prodigious period for hackers, argues PC Pro. What has led to the sudden
hacking boom? Ease of access to tools has also led to an explosion in the
numbers of people actively looking for companies with weakened defenses,
according to security experts. Meanwhile, the recession has left
thousands of highly skilled IT staff out of work and desperate for money,
while simultaneously crimping companies' IT security budgets. The
pressure to get systems up and running as quickly as possible also means
that networks aren't locked down as tightly as they should be, which can
leave back doors open for hackers."

alphadogg writes "Justice Ministers across Europe want to [0]make the
creation of 'hacking tools' a criminal offense, but critics have hit back
at the plans, saying that they are unworkable. Ministers from all 27
countries of the European Union met on June 9 to discuss European
Commission proposals for a directive on attacks against information
systems. But in addition to approving the Commission's text, the
ministers extended the draft to include 'the production and making
available of tools for committing offenses.' This is problematic, as much
legal and legitimate software could be put to criminal use by hackers.
The draft mentions 'malicious software designed to create botnets or
unrightfully obtained computer passwords,' but goes no further in
attempting to clarify what 'tools' might be subject to criminal
sanctions."

[0]Michael J. Ross writes "In the evolution of the Web, one of the most
significant improvements was the general transition from static websites
based only upon HTML, to dynamic websites based upon scripting languages.
But even then, each website was much like a silo, with no publication of
content beyond the pages provided on the site itself. That all began to
change with content syndication through RSS, and the development of web
application APIs. Nowadays, a growing number of organizations are
publishing online content through web services, as well as consuming
content published by others. These sites can be built using Drupal, an
open-source content management system (CMS). Drupal Web Services, a book
authored by Trevor James, aims to help web programmers do that sort of
development." Read below for the rest of Michael's review.

[0]coondoggie writes "The US Department of Energy today said it was
conditionally committing [1]$2 billion to develop two concentrating solar
power projects that it says will offer 500 megawatts of power combined,
effectively doubling the nation's currently installed capacity of that
type of power. Concentrated solar systems typically use parabolic mirrors
to collect solar energy."

Revotron writes "Anonymous hacker group LulzSec has begun to harness the
power of the crowd in their latest griefing attempts. After a day of
numerous DDoS attacks on a handful of famous MMOs, [0]LulzSec's phone
lines lit up with an estimated 20 calls per second. Using a fairly simple
phone redirect, they sent all of their incoming calls to various offices,
among them the FBI office in Detroit, Blizzard Customer Support, online
retailer Magnets.com, and most recently, the corporate offices of
HBGary." Update: It looks like they also [1]brought down the CIA website
tonight, but it is up now.

An anonymous reader writes "Hold on to your hamburgers Japanese
scientist Mitsyuki Ikeda at the Environmental Assessment Center in
Okayama has invented an [0]artificial meat substitute made from human
feces. The unseemly meal is made by extracting protein and lipids from
'sewage mud.' The lipids are then combined with a reaction enhancer and
whipped into 'meat' in an exploder. Ikeda makes the 'meat' more palatable
by adding things like soy protein."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]CWmike writes "For the second time in nine days, Adobe [1]has patched
a critical vulnerability in Flash Player that hackers were already
exploiting, Computerworld's Gregg Keizer reports. Adobe also updated
Reader to quash 13 new bugs and several older ones the company had not
gotten around to fixing. The memory corruption vulnerability in Flash
Player could 'potentially allow an attacker to take control of the
affected system,' Adobe said in [2]an accompanying advisory. 'There are
reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in
targeted attacks via malicious Web pages.' Adobe last issued an
'out-of-band' emergency update on June 5, when it [3]fixed a critical
flaw that attackers were exploiting to steal Gmail login credentials.
Those attacks were different from the ones Google disclosed the week
before, when it [4]accused Chinese hackers of targeting specific
individuals, including senior U.S. and South Korean government officials,
anti-Chinese government activists and journalists. Google, which bundles
Flash Player with Chrome, also updated its browser Tuesday to include the
just-patched version of Flash."
