[0]MojoKid writes "The second day of the AMD Fusion Developer Summit
began with a keynote from Microsoft's Herb Sutter, Principal Architect,
Native Languages and resident C++ guru. The gist of Herb's talk centered
around heterogeneous computing and the changes coming with future
versions of Visual Studio and C++. One of the main [1]highlights of the
talk was a demo of a C++ AMP application that seamlessly took advantage
of all of the compute resources within a few of the various demo systems,
from workstations to netbooks. The physics demo seamlessly switched from
using CPU, integrated GPU, and discrete GPU resources, showcasing the
performance capabilities of each. As additional bodies are added,
workload increases with a ramp-up to over 600 of GFLops in compute
performance."

judgecorp writes "HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is extending its campaign

cyberspace. The system will check eBay and Google to identify traders who

its campaign to recover around 7 billion lost to the Treasury each year.
It is thought that this latest development, the use of web robots, will
help HMRC track down rogue eBay and Gumtree businesses, as well as people
earning second incomes by acting as private tutors. It will also help it
hunt down so called cash-in-hand handymen and traders.'"

jdkramar was one of several readers to write with news of the Wii U
hardware information that's been trickling out since E3. The new console
will run [0]a multicore IBM processor based on 45nm architecture
(technology currently [1]underpinning Watson), and will have an AMD R700
GPU chipset found in the Radeon 4000 line of video cards. Apparently
[2]it will, in fact, run Crysis. Nintendo has confirmed that [3]the Wii U
will use a proprietary 25GB disc format, and won't support DVD or Blu-ray
playback. A spokesman said, "The reason for that is that we feel that
enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and
Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that
functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to
those technologies."

criminals pay other criminals for the technical services necessary to

economics of cybercrime began as lip service to satisfy the terms of a
government grant, but it turned out to be the key to stopping computer
attacks. Targeted methods such as using CAPTCHAs don't stop
criminals, but they add to the cost burden and put the inefficient
criminal organizations out of business, letting security researchers
focus only on the ones that survive."

| What LulzSec Logins Reveal About Bookworms, and Passwords

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Barence writes "Today the hacking group LulzSec posted 62,000 hacked
email usernames and passwords online. [1]PC Pro's Darien Graham-Smith has
analysed the passwords stolen which are believed to have come from a
website for writers and found some interesting patterns. Aside from
'password' and obvious numerical patterns (i.e. '12345') the most common
passwords share a literary theme: 'romance,' 'mystery,' 'shadow' and
'bookworm' are all commonly used passwords. 'Clearly, this is a
back-of-an-envelope breakdown of a mixed mass of unverified data,' said
Graham-Smith. 'But it gives an interesting insight into the way people
choose their passwords: in this case, apparently, on a theme that
reflects the nature of the site they're visiting.'"

| Ask Slashdot: Tools For Linux Disk Encryption and Integrity?

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader writes "I have been using Gentoo Linux for a long
time now and have always been satisfied with one of its many disk
encryption tools: cryptsetup (dm-crypt and LUKS). However, I recently
gave FreeBSD a try and, although I concluded BSD is not for me, I was
amazed at [0]geli(8), FreeBSD's disk encryption tool. It happens this
tool also provides what it calls an 'authentication mode.' Besides
encrypting the disk sector-by-sector, it also stores checksums (sha256 in
my case) in it on every write. On reads, if the checksum mismatchs, it
propagates the error up, resulting in, say, a read() error. Thus I do not
have to trust my disk (except of course for the boot partition) any
longer: any data inconsistency will be detected before the data is used.
Having searched for a long time without answers, I want to ask: is there
something similar to this in Linux? Note: Using Btrfs is a valid
solution, but is far from stable (got a few oopses during my tests)."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]drmacinyasha writes "Today [1]Lookout disclosed a new form of Android
malware found in Chinese markets which attacks third-party firmwares
(ROMs). By using permissions granted to apps which are signed with the
same private keys as the ROM itself, an app can update itself or install
and uninstall other apps without user interaction. Most third-party ROMs
use the private keys included in the Android Open Source Project, making
them vulnerable to this attack. Last month's release of [2]CyanogenMod
7.0.3 (and all subsequent builds) included an "important security fix"
which a [3]team member confirmed protects users against this
vulnerability by preventing applications signed with the platform key to
be installed to user or app-controlled storage."

CWmike writes "The first person ever appointed as the CIO of the federal
government, Vivek Kundra, is [0]resigning after two and a half years on
the job, the White House said Thursday. There was no hint in the
announcement made by Jack Lew, director of the Office of Management and
Budget, that Kundra's exit was prompted by a shift in the White House's
view on IT. Lew, who praised the CIO's work, said Kundra was leaving to
take a fellowship at Harvard. Kundra was appointed CIO a few months after
President Barack Obama took office. He immediately [1]outlined an agenda
that [2]emphasized cloud adoption, use of consumer technologies, and
making data available to the public on new sites, such as data.gov. He
was critical of [3]big IT contracts that moved too slowly and were at
risk of failing."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that an
effort to [1]outlaw the undercover recording of animal abuse in livestock
operations appears to have stalled in Iowa after previously failing in
Minnesota, Florida and New York, with the pushback coming from citizens
and activists complaining that the proposals were aimed at protecting an
industry that doesn't exhibit enough concern for farm animal welfare. A
bill introduced earlier this year to criminalize the actions of activists
who make unauthorized hidden videos of animal abuse appeared to be headed
for approval in the Iowa Legislature, with proposed penalties including
fines of up to $7,500 and up to five years in prison. 'I feel it is wrong
to absolutely lie to get a job to try to defame the employer,' says Iowa
representative Annette Sweeney, a farmer and Republican legislator who
sponsored the bill. But District Attorney James R. Horton, who filed
animal cruelty charges against employees and the owner of a large-scale
calf-raising farm, says he probably [2]'wouldn't have a case' if not for
covert video provided by an animal protection group, and that 'we
wouldn't have anything' in terms of evidence against the suspects in the
beating deaths of dairy calves at E6 Cattle Co."
