+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Books are on their way to extinction, writes
Kevin Kelly, adding that we are in a special moment when paper books are
plentiful and cheap that will not last beyond the end of this century.
'It seems hard to believe now, but within a few generations, [1]seeing an
actual paper book will be as rare for most people as seeing an actual
lion.' But a prudent society keeps at least one specimen of all it makes,
so Brewster Kahle, the founder of the Internet Archive, has decided that
we should keep a copy of every book that Google and Amazon scan so that
somewhere in the world there was at least one physical copy to represent
the millions of digital copies. That way, if anyone ever wondered if the
digital [2]book's text had become corrupted or altered, they could
[3]refer back to the physical book that was archived somewhere safe. The
books are being stored in cardboard boxes, stacked five high on a pallet
wrapped in plastic, stored 40,000 strong in a shipping container, inside
a metal warehouse on a dead-end industrial street near the railroad
tracks in Richmond California. In this nondescript and 'nothing valuable
here' building, Kahle hopes to house 10 million books about the
contents of a world-class university library. 'It still amazes me that
after 20 years [4]the only publicly available back up of the internet is
the privately funded Internet Archive. The only broad archive of
television and radio broadcasts is the same organization,' writes Kelly.
'They are now backing up the backups of books. Someday we'll realize the
precocious wisdom of it all and Brewster Kahle will be seen as a hero.'"

An anonymous reader writes "Looks like aerospace consulting firm Valador
tried to bite off more than it can chew. After already having bagged
lucrative 'safety review' contracts with SpaceX' competitors, it tried to
sell its services to SpaceX as well. However, according to SpaceX' claims
in a recent court filing, Valador tried to juice up their sales pitch by
first [0]spreading rumors at key NASA offices that SpaceX's Falcon 9
rocket is 'unsafe', and then generously offering its services to SpaceX
to aid them with addressing any undeserved bias against them among NASA
officials. In true California fashion (being the most litigious state of

for defamation, seeking damages identical to the value of the consulting
contract Valador tried to sell to them." CT: It appears that the link in

Raenex writes "An investigation by the Associated Press has found [0]a
pattern of safety regulations being relaxed in order to keep aging
nuclear power plants running. According to their investigation, when
reactor parts fail or systems fall out of compliance with the rules,
studies are conducted by the industry and government. The studies
conclude that existing standards are 'unnecessarily conservative.'
Regulations are loosened, and the reactors are back in compliance. From
the article: 'Examples abound. When valves leaked, more leakage was
allowed up to 20 times the original limit. When rampant cracking caused
radioactive leaks from steam generator tubing, an easier test of the
tubes was devised, so plants could meet standards. Failed cables. Busted
seals. Broken nozzles, clogged screens, cracked concrete, dented
containers, corroded metals and rusty underground pipes all of these
and thousands of other problems linked to aging were uncovered in the
AP's yearlong investigation. And all of them could escalate dangers in
the event of an accident.'"

[0]ciaran_o_riordan writes "Tomorrow, [1]a German court will hear the
case of AVM, a distributor of Linux-based routers, which seeks to block
Cybits from distributing software that modifies the routers' software to
add content-filtering functionality. [2]Free Software Foundation Europe
explains: 'AVM justified its position using three arguments. First, they
stated that their whole product software must be regarded as an entity
under AVM copyright, and that this entity must not be modified. The
position Mr. Welte [founder of gpl-violations.org and copyright holder of
several parts of the Linux kernel] took was that the whole product
software would in that case be a derivative work according to the GPL,
and thus the whole product software should be licensed under the GNU GPL.
AVM then switched to a second argument: that the software embedded on its
DSL terminals consisted of several parts. According to Mr. Welte, AVM
could then not prohibit anyone from modifying or distributing the GPL
licensed software parts. The final argument by AVM was that the software
on their DSL terminals is a composition of several different programs,
which, due to the creative process, would be a protected compilation and
thus under the copyright of AVM and not affected by the copyleft of the
GPL.'"

schwit1 writes "The Supreme Court on Monday [0]rejected a global warming
lawsuit against five big power companies, its most important
environmental ruling since 2007 and a victory for the utilities and the
Obama administration. The justices unanimously overturned a ruling by a
US appeals court that the lawsuit now involving six states can proceed in
an effort to force the coal-burning plants to cut emissions of gases that
contribute to climate change. In a defeat for environmentalists, the
Supreme Court agreed with the companies that regulating greenhouse gases
should be left to the Environmental Protection Agency under the clean air
laws. [1]The ruling stemmed from a 2004 lawsuit claiming the five
electric utilities have created a public nuisance by contributing to
climate change. The lawsuit wanted a federal judge to order them to cut
their carbon dioxide emissions."

[0]jfruhlinger writes "Power-efficient ARM processors are moving up the
food chain, to the extent that even Windows will soon see an ARM port.
Linux, which has long been cross-platform, should have a long head start
in this niche, right? Well, blogger Brian Proffitt explains [1]just how
messy the state of Linux support for ARM is right now, partially as a
result of mutually conflicting kernel hacks from ARM manufacturers who
just wanted to get their products out the door and weren't necessarily
abiding by the GPL obligations to release code. Things are improving now,
not least because Linus is taking a personal hand in things, but sorting
the mess out will take time."

In 2008 we [0]discussed news of an MMO in an early phase of development
that sought to merge two different forms of media: TV shows and video
games. Now, reader querbeet points out that work on the game Defiance
is much further along. [1]Screenshots and [2]an interview with a senior
developer provide [3]a clearer image of how such a project will work.
"Both the game and the show take place in a near future, post-apocalyptic
version of Earth. ... The game is centered in the remains of San
Francisco, while the show will take place in St. Louis. 'They exist
within the same universe,' Hill told Ars. 'And primarily where we're
going to be different is the fact that things that happen in the game
will occur in the show and things that happen in the show will occur in
the game. From a global standpoint this could be a large political
change, a big environmental change, and they'll happen simultaneously on
both.' As an example, Hill said that a character from the show could
leave for San Francisco, show up in the game and go on adventures with
players, before returning to St. Louis to discuss everything that
happened while they were in the game world."
