prototype of the next WP7 handset. The CEO asked the journalists present
to turn off the cameras because the new phone was 'super confidential.'
Did he really expect them to comply? After all he must know that this has
the potential to hurt the sales of [1]the recently released N9, the last
non-Windows Nokia smartphone. He would never want to do that, right?"

[0]astroengine writes "The only time we've ever directly looked for life
on Mars was during the 1970s, when NASA's Viking landers attempted to
make direct measurements of Martian microbes metabolizing. Even today,
the results of these groundbreaking experiments are hotly debated.
Although the Viking experiments were often considered premature, a team
of scientists hope to refine the next life-searching experiment to be
sent to the Red Planet [1]by building a Mars habitat on Earth. Imagine a
Mars environment 'goldfish bowl' complete with UV radiation, dust, chilly
temperatures, and an extremely low atmospheric pressure. So what have
they done with this micro-Mars environment? They've been torturing
various terrestrial microbes to see how they enjoy stints on the Martian
surface. Their results have shown that even Earth microorganisms have a
trick or two up their sleeves to survive in this alien environment."

[0]itwbennett writes "Netbooks died the death of a thousand cuts and
there were [1]conspirators aplenty with motive, weapons and opportunity.
Was the unpopularity of Linux to blame? What about Microsoft and its
efforts to kill XP? Ever smarter smartphones certainly played a role, as
did the rise of the App Store, and lighter full-featured notebooks. Or
maybe it was just that the American consumer wasn't going to be satisfied
with technology designed for third-world use. 'In late 2005, the only
computer found for $100 was stolen, was dead, or was ancient enough to
require Windows 95. A real and functional computer for $100 was a dream,
but also made people wonder what sacrifices might need to be made to
offer such a comparatively inexpensive machine,' writes Tom Henderson, in
an in-depth look at what contributed to the netbook's demise." Before
solving the murder mystery, it's worth considering [2]whether the netbook
is actually dead.

If a subscriber accumulates enough complaints, the ISP can throttle their

languages are good, but limited in what you can do... and GUI creation

CalTech has [1]determined body temperatures of sauropod dinosaurs. Their
work finds temperatures that are roughly in line with modern mammals for
body temperature. However, as the authors point out, this does not on its
own confirm dinosaurs to be entirely warm-blooded, as they may have kept
these temperatures by sheer mass. The peer-reviewed paper [2]is available
online in PNAS. You can also get [3]the article free through pubmed."

wiredmikey writes "Andrew Jaquith has written a great analysis of lessons
learned from the recent [0]RSA Cyber Attack, from a customer's
perspective. According to Jaquith, in the security industry, 'trust' is a
somewhat slippery concept, defined in terms ranging from the
cryptographic to the contractual. Bob Blakley, a Gartner analyst and
former chief scientist of Tivoli, once infamously wrote that 'Trust is
for Suckers.' What he meant is that trust is an emotional thing, [1]a
fragile bond whose value transcends prime number multiplication, tokens,
drug tests or signatures and that it is foolish to rely too much on it.
Jaquith observed three things about the RSA incident: (1) even the most
trusted technologies fail; (2) the incident illustrates what 'risk
management' is all about; and (3) customers should always come first."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]mdsolar tips an article at the NY Times which begins: "Pictures of the
Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant north of Omaha, Neb., show it encircled
by the swollen waters of the Missouri River, which reached a height of
nearly 1,007 feet above sea level at the plant yesterday. The plant's
defenses include new steel gates and other hard barriers protecting an
auxiliary building with vital reactor controls, and a water-filled berm 8
feet tall that encircles other parts of the plant. Both systems are
[1]designed to hold back floodwaters reaching 1,014 feet above sea level.
Additional concrete barriers and permanent berms, more sandbags and
another power line into the plant have been added. The plant was shut
down in April for refueling and will remain so until the flood threat is
passed. 'Today the plant is well positioned to ride out the current
extreme Missouri River flooding while keeping the public safe,' Nuclear
Regulatory Commission spokesman Victor Dricks said on an agency blog this
week. But a year ago, those new defenses were not in place, and the
plant's hard barriers could have failed against a 1,010-foot flood, the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission contends in a yearlong inspection and
enforcement action against the plant's operator, the Omaha Public Power
District."
