[0]MojoKid writes "AMD recently announced its [1]share of the TOP500
supercomputer list has grown 15 percent in the past six months. The
company credits industry trends, upgrade paths, and competitive pricing
for the increase. Of the 68 Opteron-based systems on the list, more than
half of them use the Opteron 6100 series processors. The inflection point
was marked by AMD's launch of their Magny-Cours architecture more than a
year ago and includes the twelve-core Opteron 6180 SE at 2.5GHz at one
end and two low-power parts at the other. Magny-Cours adoption is
important. Companies typically don't upgrade HPC clusters with new CPUs,
but AMD is billing their next-gen Interlagos architecture as a drop-in
option for Magny-Cours. As such, it'll offer up to 2x the cores as well
as equal-to or faster clock speeds."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Elisabeth Rosenthal writes that cable setup boxes
and DVRs have [1]become the single largest electricity drain in many
American homes, causing an increase of over $10/month for a home with
many devices, with some typical home entertainment configurations
[2]eating more power than a new refrigerator. The set-top boxes are
energy hogs mostly because their drives, tuners and other components are
running full tilt, 24 hours a day, even when not in active use. 'People
in the energy efficiency community worry a lot about these boxes, since
they will make it more difficult to lower home energy use,' says John
Wilson, a former member of the California Energy Commission. 'Companies
say it can't be done or it's too expensive. But in my experience, neither
one is true. It can be done, and it often doesn't cost much, if
anything.' The perpetually 'powered on' state is largely a function of
design and programming choices made by electronics companies and cable
and Internet providers, which are related to the way cable networks
function in the United States. Similar devices in some European countries
can automatically go into standby mode when not in use, cutting power
drawn by half and go into an optional 'deep sleep,' which [3]can reduce
energy consumption by about 95 percent (PDF) compared with when the
machine is active. Although the EPA has established Energy Star standards
for set-top boxes and has plans to tighten them significantly by 2013,
cable providers and box manufacturers like Cisco Systems, Samsung and
Motorola currently do not feel consumer pressure to improve box
efficiency."

for both large scales (cloud computing) and small (multicore CPUs). Some
languages were designed for concurrency and distribution; One of those
languages is Oz, which provides advanced primitives regarding concurrency

functional and logic programming. Despite its innovative features and

reason is its [0]unusual syntax." Read on to learn about an effort to

adeelarshad82 writes "Building [0]on last year's efforts, PCMag once
again hit the road on a 6,000 mile trip to test out eight 3G and 4G
networks to determine which ones were the fastest (and slowest) in 21
different cities. With 10 stops in each city for at least 15 minutes
each, the team used custom speed test software on 16 different handsets
which ran HTTP upload and download tests every 25 seconds to 3 minutes.
The [1]test results were broken down by city as well as region. As
expected, Verizon's 4G led the pack. It performed the best in Dallas,
where it averaged 15.75 Mbsp and also hit the highest download speed of
37.66 Mbsp. On the other hand, Sprint's 4G results were disappointing; in
some cities even AT&T provided better download speeds. Beyond the 4G,
T-Mobile's HSPA+ offered blazing fast speeds as well, going as high up as
15.93 Mbsp in Detroit while averaging the best in Dallas at 6.44 Mbps.
Amongst the 3G networks, AT&T mostly outperformed all others."

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Forbes: "Nintendo
started the mainstream push into glasses free (autostereoscopic) 3D
gaming with its Nintendo 3DS system earlier this year. While sales were
decent for the device, the price point, hardcore focus and lack of killer
app games have failed to replicate the mainstream success of Nintendo
DSi. But a strong E3 with top-tier 3D games ... should help attract a
broader audience to the device, especially once Nintendo offers a price
cut. While some have called 3D phones gimmicky, these devices are already
commonplace in Asia. And with an influx of new 3D phones entering the
market this year, coupled with the Nintendo 3DS, Jim Cameron recently
[said] he sees these glasses-free devices as being key for the adoption
of 3D TVs in the homes. He said autostereoscopic 3D games will be the
entry level for most people to 3D. While the technology for big screen
glasses free 3D is still further away, [0]small devices like 3D phones
and Nintendo 3DS will show off the technology."

[0]cardoni writes "Dan Yoder, CTO at Border Stylo, offers insights on the
current state of simultaneous iPhone / Android development using PhoneGap
and his thoughts on [1]the debate over native apps versus Web apps.
Quoting: 'One problem with the debate is that its a false dichotomy,
since you can embed a Web browser within a native application. And,
conversely, you can extend an embedded Web browser to provide access to
native APIs. The two alternatives have not been mutually exclusive for
years now. And, focusing on the strengths of native applications ignores
the benefits of Web applications. For example, theres the appeal of
writing code that will run on a variety of different devices, ranging
from mobile phones, to tablets, to laptops, even to gaming consoles.
Virtually every major device platform now sports a Web browser, and it
can often be discreetly embedded within a native application. To boot,
much of this code can be tested using a Web browser, which enables more
easily automated testing. Its also easier to find Web developers than it
is to find native developers.'"

hard-wired connection is out of the question. I have a Verizon voice +
data plan, and I've heard all the horror stories of [0]multi-thousand
dollar international data roaming charges. What I'd like to do is get 1-2
GB of data (5 GB would be great) to use on a Canadian provider's network
for a reasonable fee (say, less than $100 total) as a wireless hotspot
set-up. I have both a CDMA iPhone and a GSM iPad, so I really just need a
micro-SIM or a way to register the IMIE. It appears that both [1]Rogers

attractive iPad option), but there are conflicting reports as to whether
a [3]U.S. credit card can be used to buy service. I can't believe I'm the

this successfully? Is there another option I'm not considering?"
