Wind farms can also have a big economic impact, something Juhl Wind, Inc., has been dedicated to bringing to rural communities for years.

JUHL believes that in order to develop wind farms, they should do it right and get all the economic benefit out of it by doing it community-based.

  • Juhl Wind's "Community Wind" differs from larger, utility owned wind farms by sharing the majority of wind farm ownership with the actual landowners and local communities.
  • Under Juhl Wind's model, farmers or landowners don't simply lease the land to big companies who install and benefit from the turbines. They are investors who also collect a share of the profits, which has the potential to add 30-40% to their income.
  • Juhl Wind, Inc. only hires local contractors to work on its projects, which all funnels money back into the local economy.

Juhl Wind, Inc. has developed 11 wind farms throughout the upper Midwest, producing approximately 117 megawatts of wind power. It has another 16 new wind farms in development, which will bring the total megawatts to approximately 517. That is enough to power 155,100 homes at any given time.

Renewable Energy Delivered Almost A Fifth Of Global Electricity Production In 2010.

New investment in renewable energy rose to $211 billion globally last year from $160 billion in 2009, and more than five times the amount invested in 2004. In the US, renewable energy accounted for 10.9% of domestic primary energy production, an increase of 5.6% from 2009.

Over the last 100 years, one of the largest challenges for the wind industry has been the inability to store/inventory electricity. One of the solutions has been Zinc-Air batteries. Zinc-air batteries (non-rechargeable), and zinc-air fuel cells, (mechanically-rechargeable) are electro-chemical batteries powered by oxidizing zinc with oxygen from the air. These batteries have high energy densities and are relatively inexpensive to produce. Sizes range from very small button cells for hearing aids, larger batteries used in film cameras that previously used mercury batteries, to very large batteries used for electric vehicle propulsion.

One of the companies on the forefront of this new technology is Zinc Air Inc.(ZAI), based in Kalispell, Montana. ZAI is developing a grid storage system focused on breaking the cost/benefit threshhold which if currently limiting widespread adoption of storage. ZAI is delivering a 1MW /10MWh battery system at 2-3 times lower pricing than our current competition will allow for more rapid industry adoption, wider societal acceptance, and facilitate a reduction of fossil fuel carbon emissions.

Juhl Wind, Inc. recently announced an agreement with Zinc Air for the installation of a one Mega Watt Scale Advanced Storage System,  to be installed at the Woodstock Hills, Minnesota Wind Farm. Juhl Wind plans to install the system at its recently acquired Woodstock Hills wind farm located near the Company's headquarters in Woodstock, Minnesota.
