CWmike writes "A majority of mobile app developers see [0]Android as the
smart bet over the long run even as they vote for Apple's iOS in the
short term, according to a survey conducted jointly by Appcelerator and
IDC. The survey polled more than 2,300 developers who use Appcelerator's
Titanium cross-platform compiler to produce iOS and Android native apps.
Of the 2,300 polled, 59% said that Android had the 'best long-term
outlook,' compared with just 35% who pegged Apple's iOS with that label.
But three out of four said that iOS offers the best 'near-term' outlook,
with 76% tagging Apple's operating system as the best revenue
opportunity."

Trailrunner7 writes "Microsoft on Tuesday will [0]release an emergency
out-of-band patch for the ASP.NET padding oracle attack that was
disclosed earlier this month. The patch will only be available on the
company's Download Center for the time being, however. The company is
taking the step of [1]releasing an emergency fix for the bug because of
the seriousness of the vulnerability which potentially affects millions
of Web applications and the fact that there are attacks ongoing against
it already. The patch will fix the flaw in all versions of the .NET
framework. Although Microsoft issued guidance about workarounds to defend
against attacks on the ASP.NET bug shortly after it was publicly
disclosed, the researchers, Juliano Rizzo and Thai Duong, said that
[2]the workarounds did not fully protect users against their attack."

Physical gold has both pros and cons, but from a safety standpoint would

the mall? The giant, gold-dispensing ATMs will monitor the market
conditions for gold every 10 minutes in order to reflect spot price
changes as they occur." We already covered [1]similar machines installed

bdsesq sent in a story on Ars Technica highlighting how the US
government's drive for security back doors has [0]enabled the Iranian
government to spy on its citizens. "For instance, TKTK was lambasted last
year for selling telecom equipment to Iran that included the ability to
wiretap mobile phones at will. Lost in that uproar was the fact that
sophisticated wiretapping capabilities became standard issue for
technology thanks to the US government's CALEA rules that require all
phone systems, and now broadband systems, to include these capabilities."

tekgoblin writes "Joshua Walker spent the last few months creating a
masterpiece. He created [0]the Starship Enterprise 1701-D from Star Trek:
The Next Generation in Minecraft using just blocks. He recorded a short
video of him explaining how he did it and even gave us a sneak peek at
the partially completed ship." He also [1]posted on the Penny-Arcade
forums about how he did it. If you aren't impressed by that, perhaps you
should check out a [2]16-Bit ALU also implemented in Minecraft which
totally reminded me of [3]one of my favorite XKCD comics.

javab0y writes "The folks over at basementcoders did a podcast with James
Gosling, The Father of Java, last week at a coffee shop in San Francisco
during the JavaOne conference. In a raw and no-holds-barred interview,
James let loose on Oracle, the Google Lawsuit, and his experience with
IBM. You know its going to be good when he starts out saying, 'I
eventually graduated in '83. Went to work for IBM which is, you know, is
within the top 10 of my stupidest career decisions I've made.' The
podcast [0]was fully transcribed."

An anonymous reader writes "A couple of guys (us) in Cambridge have
written a [0]cycle routing system, CycleStreets.net, based on open data,
and have now released it as a free iPhone app. [1]It's been done on a
shoestring, in spare time. There's an API and some disruptive tech in the
form of a photo submission screen where street problems can be submitted
directly. Because it's open data, you don't have to wait 6 months for the
routing to be fixed if there's a bug. Android and .mobi versions are in
the works, with the apps being done on GitHub."
