zerOnIne writes "Dr. Mark Micire of UMass Lowell has built [0]an
intriguing new user interface on the Microsoft Surface, a
multitouch-capable table computer. The interface is being used to control
swarms of robots for disaster response, search, and rescue. One of the
most interesting things about it is the intuitive tabletop joystick
widget. Using a very fast hand-detection-and-identification algorithm,
they can paint a touch joystick (dubbed the DREAM controller) directly
underneath the hand. This joystick conforms to the size of the user's
hand and tracks with hand movements, making sure that the control is
always directly under the hand where the user expects it, even without
haptic feedback. I've had a chance to go hands-on with this system, and I
think it's truly remarkable."

Republic's new [0]Copyright Act [Czech PDF] was leaked to Pirate News.
Included among several disturbing provisions are [1]new regulations for
'public licenses' such as Creative Commons licenses and the GPL/BSD
licenses. The amendment essentially requires that an artist wishing to
use a public license must notify the administrator of a collecting
agency, and must prove that they created the work in question. This goes
against one of the strengths of Creative Commons and other licenses,
namely the ease with which they can be applied. Additionally, collecting
agencies will have increased jurisdiction over copylefted and orphaned
works. ZeroPaid covers the story, noting that the amendment also
[2]reduces the royalties which artists receive from libraries by 40%,
with that money instead going directly to publishers."

An anonymous reader writes "This week TPB got a very unusual e-mail. It
was a '[0]Notice of Ridiculous Activity' from a company that had found
one of its apps cracked and listed as a torrent on TPB. The app in
question is called Memoires, developed by Coding Robots. Memoires is
marketed as the easiest way to keep a journal on your Mac. It costs
$29.99 to buy after you've enjoyed a 30-day free trial. That, of course,
didn't stop someone from cracking the software and making it available
for free as a torrent. Dmitry Chestnykh, founder of Coding Robots,
noticed the cracked torrent and decided to download it to see what had
been done. After using it, he was upset not because the cracked version
was available, but because the cracker (named Minamoto) had done such a
bad job of cracking it. The best section of the e-mail has to be this: 'I
demand that you don't remove this torrent, so that people can laugh at
Minamoto and CORE skills. However, I also demand the[sic] better crack to
be made, so that it doesn't cripple the user experience of my beautiful

Barence writes "Garmin is [0]recalling 1.25 million of its nvi satnavs
after batteries overheated. According to Garmin, the issue only affects
devices containing batteries manufactured within a set date range by a
third-party supplier and that have a specific printed circuit board
design. 'It appears that the interaction of these factors can, in rare
circumstances, increase the possibility of overheating, which may lead to
a fire hazard,' the company said in a statement. 'Although there have
been no injuries or significant property damage caused by this issue,
Garmin is taking this action out of an abundance of caution.' Perhaps
Garmin should also issue a software update that diverts drivers to their
nearest fire station?"

crimeandpunishment writes "With just days before the deadline,
BlackBerry's maker was shot down by India in its latest effort to
[0]avoid having its services cut off for about a million Indian users of
the device. Research in Motion's effort to [1]broaden the debate over
data encryption were rejected. The Indian government [2]wants access to
users' emails. The head of a powerful industry group in India accused RIM
of taking the wrong approach to negotiations, saying, 'It need not have
escalated to this level. Folks like RIM have to understand business is
done differently here.'"

[0]twoallbeefpatties writes "Wired reports that a 61-year-old reservist
in Afghanistan was [1]fired from his job as a staff officer after
[2]writing a sardonic op-ed criticizing the daily briefings provided by
his taskforce, portraying them as little more than a neverending stream
of redundant PowerPoint slideshows. This came after attempts to reform
the process by giving his superiors a presentation that, of course,
included five PowerPoint slides." Maybe he should have presented it as an
[3]art project instead of a complaint.
