+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

itwbennett writes "Is open source's growth in emerging markets what is
driving Microsoft to say 'we love open source' with an attempt at a
straight face? 'The emerging markets (like the BRIC nations) are a huge
potential market for Microsoft,' says Brian Proffitt. 'And I believe
[0]Redmond is wisely not taking the FUD route on open source software in
those markets. Why? Because open source already has some strong roots in
the BRIC nations (heck, in Brazil, open source is the whole darn tree),
and any attack on open source would be seen as a foreign company
attacking local software projects. If Microsoft attacked open source
publicly in this environment, a lot of potential customers and developers
in those countries could react in a protectionist manner and start giving
Microsoft the stink-eye.'"

Lucas123 writes "Researchers at Rice University said today they have been
able to create [0]a new non-volatile memory using nanocrystal wires as
small as 5 nanometers wide that can make chips five times more dense than
the 27 nanometer NAND flash memory being manufactured today. And, the
memory is cheap because it uses silicon and not more expensive graphite
as been used in previous iterations of the nanowire technology. The
nanowires also allow stacking of layers to create 3-D memory, even more
dense. 'The fact that they can do this in 3D makes makes it highly
scalable. We've got memory that's made out of dirt-cheap material and it
works,' a university spokesman said."

the grain used to ferment the beer. Astonishingly enough, 'Even the tibia

that they were giving high doses to the child to try and cure him of
illness.' The extent of saturation in the bones leads the scientists to
assert that the population regularly consumed [2]tetracycline antibiotics
knowing that it would cure certain sicknesses."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "CIOL reports that [1]Wikipedia has revealed the
secret of Agatha Christie's famous murder mystery 'The Mousetrap' by
identifying the killer in the world's longest running play, now at over
24,000 performances ever since its maiden performance in 1952, despite
protests from the author's family and petitions from fans who think the
revelation is a spoiler. Angry at the revelation, Matthew Prichard,
Christie's grandson, who describes the decision of Wikipedia as
'unfortunate,' says he will raise the matter with the play's producer,
Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen. 'My grandmother always got upset if the plots of
her books or plays were revealed in reviews and I don't think this is
any different. It's a pity if a publication, if I can call it that,
potentially spoils enjoyment for people who go to see the play.'
Unrepentant, Wikipedia justifies the decision to reveal the ending of the
play. 'Our purpose is to collect and report notable knowledge. It's
exceedingly easy to avoid knowing the identity of the murderer: just
don't read it.'"

pickens writes "The NY Times reports that Neal Stephenson's company
Subutai has released the first installment of Stephenson's new novel,
Mongoliad, about the Mongol invasion of Europe, using what it calls
[0]the PULP platform for creating digital novels. The core of the
experience is still a text novel, but authors can add additional material
like background articles, images, music, and video and there are also
social features that allow readers to create their own profiles, earn
badges for activity on the site or in the application, and interact with
other readers. Stephenson says the material is an extension of what many
science fiction and fantasy novels already offer. 'I can remember reading
Dune for the first time, and I started by reading the glossary,'
Stephenson says. 'Any book that had that kind of extra stuff in it was
always hugely fascinating to me.' Jeremy Bornstein says Subutai is
experimenting with a new model for publishing books and says the
traditional model of paying for content may not hold up when the content
can 'be canned and sent around to your friends for free,' but that people
will hopefully still pay for content if 'the experience is so much more
rich, so much more involving.'"

more complicated than that, because you need to ask the user if they
really want to shut down and if unsaved documents should be saved. And
[0]that warrants a patent that also covers Mac OS X. Next time you shut
down Windows, remember how complicated it is for Windows to shut down.
Perhaps that is the reason why this procedure can take minutes in some

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

A study by Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick and co-author Matthias Hastall
suggests that your grandma's self-esteem gets a boost when she hears
about [0]the stupid things young people do. "Living in a youth centered
culture, they may appreciate a boost in self-esteem. That's why they
prefer the negative stories about younger people, who are seen as having
a higher status in our society," said Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick.
From the article: "All the adults in the study were shown what they were
led to believe was a test version of a new online news magazine. They
were also given a limited time to look over either a negative and
positive version of 10 pre-selected articles. Each story was also paired
with a photograph depicting someone of either the younger or the older
age group. The researchers found that older people were more likely to
choose to read negative articles about those younger than themselves.
They also tended to show less interest in articles about older people,
whether negative or positive."

coondoggie writes "The US military is inundated with video from airborne
unmanned aircraft, remote monitoring systems and security outposts. In an
effort to speed up the processing and analyzing of all this video,
researchers at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) this
week awarded an almost [0]$11 million contract to open source software
vendor Kitware to help develop what DARPA calls its Video and Image
Retrieval and Analysis Tool (VIRAT) program."

An anonymous reader writes "The [0]manifesto of the man holding the
Discovery Channel hostage with a bomb has been released. He has [1]fired
shots and taken hostages. His main complaints are about overpopulation,
religion and civilization. He wants them to avoid encouraging people to
produce more 'disgusting human babies,' to get people to accept
'Malthus-Darwin science,' reject civilization and its 'disgusting
religious-cultural roots,' and to stop 'ALL immigration pollution.'" The
man has now been shot by police, and the hostages have been freed.

| China Demands Real Names From Mobile Phone Users |

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

itwbennett writes "Starting this month, mobile carriers in China are
requiring people who set up new mobile phone accounts to register with
their real names as part of a new [0]government measure to reduce
anonymity among the country's 800 million mobile users. And within 3
years, the carriers must also register the real identities of all
existing users, said China Telecom spokesman Xu Fei. The new policy comes
as China has been pushing users to register with their real names online.
In August, online gamers had to begin real-name registration under
regulations that are meant to protect minors from Internet addiction and
'unhealthy' content."
