TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here's a look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

More countries issued travel alerts today. The U.S., Britain, and now Sweden and Japan are warning citizens of possible terror attacks in Europe. That threat is said to come from al-Qaida groups training in Pakistan. And today, a U.S. missile reportedly killed at least five German militants in Pakistan. Bottom line--how dangerous is it for Americans to travel? CBS News Justice and Homeland Security Correspondent Bob Orrexamines the issue, tonight.

CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a CBS News contributor, reports tonight on the battle against an aggressive form of brain cancer called gliobastoma. On average, patients only live about 14 months after diagnosis. But there's been some progress reported on a vaccine targeting gene mutations in the tumor. Dr. Gupta reports on the potential impact for cancer patients.

All too often, American deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan get reported simply as numbers. Tonight, CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin brings you the remarkable story of two America's fallen heroes. Roommates at the Naval Academy, they've been reunited today at Arlington National Cemetary.

CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman continues his trek around the globe to prove that Everybody In the World has a Story. Tonight, he'll introduce to you 24-year-old Xiao Hau. She's the first person in her family to own a car, and a company. But her success may have come with a heavy cost. Steve will have that story, from Chengdu, China tonight.

See you tonight. Katie

In addition to the day's top headlines, here's an early look at some of the stories we are working on for tomorrow morning's broadcast:

It's looking like a tough year for Senate Democrats -- almost all of whom are polling below 50 percent, a month before the important midterm elections. Several weeks ago, many Republicans including NRSC Chair John Cornyn thought Republicans wouldn't be able to retake the Senate. Today, it seems like that may be a distinct possibility. On Tuesday morning, CBS News Political Analyst John Dickerson will walk you through some Critical Contests we will be keeping an eye on. If you haven't been keeping up with your political news, this is a segment you won't want to miss.

Important information for consumers like you. The Credit Card Act of 2009 is finally in full effect. The good news? You are most likely carrying less debt -- less than $4 thousand on average -- $1,100 lower than in 2009. But according to Consumer Reports, credit cards services are still rated among the lowest services they have ever analyzed, and despite all the reform, there are still plenty of credit card pitfalls you can fall into. For instance, credit card rates have increased. The average rate on existing cards was 14.7% vs. 13.1% last year at this time. Another problem? There are a ton of new credit cards available with long preview rates, but the longer the teaser rate applies, the higher the rates will be. CBS News Business and Economics Correspondent Rebecca Jarvis will tell you what you need to know about common current credit card pitfalls, and how you can avoid them.

An Early Show Exclusive... Coast guards are hunting for a pair of missing American balloonists last detected piloting their craft over the Adriatic Sea in rough weather. Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis were participating in the 54th Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race, an annual race in which teams of balloonists try to see who can fly the farthest on a maximum of about 1,000 cubic meters (35,300 cubic feet) of gas. Abruzzo is the son of famed balloonist Ben Abruzzo, who, in 1981, was part of the first team to cross the Pacific Ocean by balloon. Sandra Abruzzo, the sister-in-law of Richard Abruzzo, will join us exclusively from Albuquerque tomorrow morning to give you an update on the search for Richard and Carol.

Few films this year are getting as much attention and critical acclaim as The Social Network. It's being called "the movie Facebook doesn't want you to see," and takes you inside the very complicated world that brought 500 million friends together, while tearing numerous relationships apart. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake plays its former president Sean Parker. The two join us Tuesday morning to give you a sneak peek of the film and share some behind the scenes secrets that you won't want to miss.

In his new book, Fannie's Last Supper, author and founder of America's Test Kitchen, Chris Kimball, set out to recreate an authentic 1896 12-course Victorian holiday dinner party. In the book, Kimball describes the experience of replicating one of Fannie Farmer's extravagant menus -- one that spanned a wide range of Victorian cookery, from oysters, rissoles, soup, venison, and lobster to goose, salmon, fried artichokes, sorbet, jellies, cake, and a final cheese course. He'll join us tomorrow morning to tell you what it was like to prepare this feast using the authentic ingredients, tools and techniques from that time. Kimball will also whip up some of his favorite dishes including: Grilled Salmon with Caper Vinaigrette, a puff pastry with Onion-Cherry Chutney Filling and Blue Cheese, and "Orange Snow" -- a delicious chilled orange dessert! So have your pen and pad ready tomorrow morning -- these unique recipes will make your next dinner party spectacular!
