meckdevil writes with this excerpt from the Miller-McCune magazine: "In a
series of recent findings, researchers describe bacteria that communicate
in sophisticated ways, take concerted action, influence human physiology,
alter human thinking, bioengineer the environment and control their own
evolution. ... The abilities of bacteria are interesting to understand in
their own right, and knowing how bacteria function in the biosphere may
lead to new sources of energy or ways to degrade toxic chemicals, for
example. But emerging evidence on the role of bacteria in human
physiology brings the wonder and promise and the hazards of
misunderstanding them up close and personal. ... Because [0]in a very
real sense, bacteria are us. Recent research has shown that gut microbes
control or influence nutrient supply to the human host, the development
of mature intestinal cells and blood vessels, the stimulation and
maturation of the immune system, and blood levels of lipids such as
cholesterol. They are, therefore, intimately involved in the bodily
functions that tend to be out of kilter in modern society: metabolism,
cardiovascular processes and defense against disease. Many researchers
are coming to view such diseases as manifestations of imbalance in the
ecology of the microbes inhabiting the human body. If further evidence
bears this out, medicine is about to undergo a profound paradigm shift,
and medical treatment could regularly involve kindness to microbes."

An anonymous reader writes "A team from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology's Field and Space Robotic Laboratory has [0]designed a new
solar-powered water desalination system to provide drinking water to
disaster zones and disadvantaged parts of the planet. Desalination
systems often require a lot of energy and a large infrastructure to
support them, but [1]MIT's compact system is able to cope due to its
ingenious design. The system's photovoltaic panel is able to generate
power for the pump, which in turn pushes undrinkable seawater through a
permeable membrane. MIT's prototype can reportedly produce 80 gallons of
drinking water per day, depending on weather conditions."

CWmike writes "Physicists at the University of California at Riverside
have made a breakthrough in developing a 'spin computer,' which would
[0]combine logic with nonvolatile memory, bypassing the need for
computers to boot up. The advance could also lead to super-fast chips.
The new transistor technology, which one lead scientist believes could
become a reality in about five years, would reduce power consumption to
the point where eventually computers, mobile phones and other electronic
devices could remain on all the time. The breakthrough came when
scientists at UC Riverside successfully injected a spinning electron into
a resistor material called graphene, which is essentially a very thin
layer of graphite. The graphene in this case is one-atom thick. The
process is known as '[1]tunneling spin injection.' A lead scientist for
the project said the clock speeds of chips made using tunneling spin
injection would be 'thousands of times' faster than today's processors.
He describes the tech as a totally new concept that 'will essentially
give memory some brains.'"

[0]MojoKid writes "Today, Western Digital announced the world's highest
density hard drive, as they reach the 3TB mark with their newest, 5th
generation Caviar Green product. The [1]Caviar Green 3TB serves up a
super-sized combination of reduced power consumption, lower operating
temperature, and a quieter operation. Unfortunately, if you're still
using Windows XP, don't expect your system to make full use of any 3TB
drive (yet). The problem is that older operating systems, in combination
with a legacy BIOS and master boot record (MBR) partition table scheme,
face a barrier at 2.19TB. Existing motherboards utilizing BIOS
(non-UEFI), GPT ready operating systems like Windows 7 64-bit, and
appropriate storage class drivers, can address the entire capacity of
hard drives larger than 2.19TB. Another issue is that a number of host
bus adapter (HBA) and chipset vendors don't offer driver support for
these types of drives. To provide [2]a solution for this compatibility
issue, Western Digital bundles an HBA with the Caviar Green 3TB drive
that allows the operating system to use a known driver to correctly
support extra large capacity drives. This solution is reportedly just
temporary until the rest of the industry catches up."

Android as "open" and iOS and iPhone as "closed." We find this a bit

proprietary user interfaces to differentiate themselves from the
commodity Android experience. The user's left to figure it out. Compare
this to iPhone, where every handset works the same.' Jobs stated that the
real debate is between 'fragmented versus integrated' and which is better
for the consumer. 'When selling to users who want their devices to just
work, we believe integrated will trump fragmented every time. And we also
think our developers can be more innovative if they can target a singular
platform rather than a hundred variants.' Jobs also criticized the
Android Marketplace, pointing out that there are at least three other app
stores being launched by vendors, causing confusion for users and work
for developers. 'This is gonna be a mess for both users and developers,'
Jobs said. 'Contrast this with Apple's integrated App Store, which offers
users the easiest-to-use, largest app store in the world, preloaded on
every iPhone.'"

Google's Android 3.0 are [0]beginning to leak out. The platform is
codenamed Gingerbread; it includes video chat to compete with the iPhone,
and a graphical overhaul to try to make it look a bit better compared to
its rivals.

The article makes the case that Jobs has been hinting that he wants to
actually spend some of the $51 billion Apple has been sitting on, and
that [0]Facebook is a likely candidate. Considering how thin the Ping
social network is, and the integration issues the two companies have had,
there are some good reasons for such a deal. And a heck of a lot of
reasons why not.

Trailrunner7 writes "The persistent method that security researcher Samy
Kamkar introduced last week for storing tracking data on a user's
machine, known as the 'Evercookie,' [0]is even more worrisome when used
on mobile devices, according to another researcher's analysis. The
Evercookie is a simple method for forcing a user's machine to retain
browser cookies by storing the data in a number of different locations.
The method also has the ability to recreate deleted cookies if it finds
that the user has removed them. Created by Kamkar as a demonstration of a
way that sites could use to persistently track users even after they
clear their browser cookies, the Evercookie has drawn the attention of a
number of other researchers who have spent some time looking for methods
to defeat it. A researcher in South Africa took a look at the way the the
Evercookie works on both Safari on the desktop and on mobile devices, and
found that it can be undone in some circumstances. However, he also found
that the mobile version of Safari fares far worse in its handling of the
Evercookie than the standard version does."

An anonymous reader writes "For many, many years, every time some new
technology has come along, the music industry has insisted that it's
going to "kill" the industry. The player piano was supposed to kill live
music. So was the radio. And, of course, every time this happens the
press is willing to take the industry's word at face value. In 1980, the
news program 20/20 posted a report all about how "home taping is killing
music," with various recording industry execs insisting the industry was
on its last legs unless something was done. Someone posted that 20/20
episode to YouTube a few years back, where it sat in obscurity until
people noticed it a couple weeks ago. And suddenly, [0]Universal Music
issued a takedown notice for the show. Universal Music does not own
20/20, and there were only brief clips of music in the show. It appears
the only reason for Universal to issue the takedown is that it doesn't
want you seeing how badly it overreacted in the past."

[0]MojoKid writes "At a press event for the impending launch of AMD's new
Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 series graphics cards, the company took the
opportunity to provide an early look at the [1]first, fully functional
samples of their upcoming 'Llano' processor, or APU (Applications
Processer Unit). For those unfamiliar with Llano, it's 32nm 'Fusion'
product that integrates CPU, GPU, and Northbridge functions on a single
die. The chip is a low-power derivative of the company's current Phenom
II architecture fused with a GPU that will target a wide range of
operating environments at speeds of 3GHz or higher. [2]Test systems
showed the integrated GPU had no trouble running Alien vs. Predator at a
moderate resolution with DirectX 11 features enabled. In terms of the
Radeon 6800 series, board shots have been unveiled today, as well as
scenes from AMD's upcoming tech demo, Mecha Warrior, showcasing the new
graphics technology and advanced effects from the open source Bullet
Physics library."
