blackraven14250 writes with news that China, after putting at least a
temporary [0]stop to rare earth exports to Japan, is [1]now doing the
same with exports to the US; according to the linked article, this is in
response to recent US [2]promises to investigate certain Chinese trade

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Rock, Paper, Shotgun:
"Blizzard have taken the extremely peculiar decision to ban players from
playing StarCraft II [0]for using cheats in the single-player game. This
meant that, despite cheating no one but themselves, they were locked out
of playing the single-player game. Which is clearly bonkers. But it's not
enough for the developer. Blizzard's lawyers are now [1]setting out to
sue those who create cheats. Gamespot reports that the megolithic company
is [2]chasing after three developers of hacks for 'destroying' their
online game. It definitely will be in violation of the end user
agreement, so there's a case. However, it's a certain element of their
claim that stands out for attention. They're claiming using the hacks
causes people to infringe copyright: 'When users of the Hacks download,
install, and use the Hacks, they copy StarCraft II copyrighted content
into their computer's RAM in excess of the scope of their limited
license, as set forth in the EULA and ToU, and create derivative works of
StarCraft II.'" Blizzard used similar reasoning in their [3]successful
lawsuit against the creators of a World of Warcraft bot.

front door of the McDonald's prominently warns potential thieves of the

lithium-ion batteries that could be responsible for their degradation

some lithium was irreversibly lost from the positive to negative
electrode of dead batteries, and no longer participated in charging and

[0]Ponca City writes "Nicholas Jackson writes in the Atlantic about a
woman who requested only curvilinear/feminine shapes for her new home and
has [1]purchased an an entire Boeing 747-200, transported it by
helicopter to her 55-acre property in the remote hills of Malibu and
after deconstructing it, is having all 4,500,000 pieces put back together
to form a main house and six ancillary structures including a meditation
pavilion, an animal barn, and an art studio building. "The scale of a 747
aircraft is enormous over 230 feet long, 195 feet wide and 63 feet tall
with over 17,000 cubic feet of cargo area alone and represents a
tremendous amount of material for a very economical price of less than
$50,000 dollars," writes Architect David Hertz. "In researching airplane
wings and superimposing different airplane wing types on the site to
scale, the wing of a 747, at over 2,500 sq. ft., became an ideal
configuration to maximize the views and provide a self supporting roof
with minimal additional structural support needed." Called the "Wing
House," as a structure and engineering achievement, the [2]aircraft
encloses an enormous amount of space using the least amount of materials
in a very resourceful and efficient manner and the recycling of the 4.5
million parts of this "big aluminum can" is seen as an extreme example of
sustainable reuse and appropriation. Interestingly enough the architects
had to register the roof of the house with the FAA so pilots flying
overhead would not mistake it as a downed aircraft."

An anonymous reader writes "Another American election is almost here, and
while electronic voting is commonplace, it is still overwhelmingly run by
closed source, proprietary systems. It [0]has [1]been [2]shown [3]that
many of these systems can be compromised (and because they are closed,
there may be holes we simply cannot know about). Plus they are vulnerable
to software bugs and are often based on unstable, closed-source operating
systems. By the inherent nature of closed software, when systems are ([4]optionally!)
certified by registrars, there is no proof that they will behave the same
on election day as in tests. The opportunities for fraud, tampering and
malfunction are rampant. But nonetheless, there is very little political
will for [5]open [6]source [7]voting, let alone simple measures like
[8]end-to-end auditable voting systems or more radical approaches like

Trevor James writes "Drupal 7 is currently at beta 1 stage with 11
critical issues remaining to be fixed before an official release version.
The question arises whether we should all be writing about Drupal 7 now

writing about it. It can only help introduce new users to the Drupal
application and the Drupal community and get new people involved to help
test Drupal 7. This will ultimately help improve the software for its
official release and on. This helps to build the Drupal community of
users and developers. It helps spread the word to everyone about this
flexible and robust content management system. We want Drupal to be used.
So this is one way of getting it out there and in the public sphere."

Australian Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor has advised visitors to take
a better safe than sorry policy when it comes to their porn stashes, and
[0]declare all porn that they think might be illegal with customs
officers. From the article: "The government said it changed the wording
on passenger arrival cards after becoming aware of confusion among
travellers about what pornography to declare. 'People have a right to
privacy and while some pornography is legal and does not need to be
disclosed, all travellers should be aware that certain types of
pornography are illegal and must be declared to customs,' Mr O'Connor
said."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

itwbennett writes "U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is visiting Beijing
this week to discuss how China and the US can better coordinate
[0]efforts to stop intellectual property rights violations. 'One of the
things that has happened in recent years is that counterfeiting has
become a globalized industry,' said Christian Murck, the president of the
American Chamber of Commerce in China. To effectively shut down these
operations, cross-country efforts at strengthening global enforcement
like Holder's visit to China are crucial, he added. Coinciding with
Holder's visit, China announced it will launch a new national campaign to
crack down on intellectual property rights violations. The campaign will
take aim at the production and distribution of pirated goods such as DVDs
and software products. Violations relating to registered trademarks and
patents will also be targeted. The campaign will last for half a year.
The commercial value of pirated software in China, at $7.5 billion, is
second only to that in the U.S., where it is $8.3 billion, according to
the Business Software Alliance and IDC."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

alphadogg writes "[0]The current model of selling commercial enterprise
software is broken, charged the CEO for Red Hat. It is too expensive,
doesn't address user needs and, worst of all, it leaves chief information
officers holding all the risk of implementing new systems. 'The business
models between customer and vendors are fundamentally broken,' said Jim
Whitehurst, speaking Wednesday at the Interop conference in New York.
'Vendors have to guess at what [customers] want, and there is a mismatch
of what customers want and what they get. Creating feature wars is not
what the customer is looking for.' Whitehurst estimated that the total
global IT market, not including telecommunications, is about $1.4
trillion a year. Factor in the rough estimates that half of all IT
projects fail or are significantly downgraded, and that only half of all
features in software packages are actually used, then it would follow
that 'easily $500 billion of that $1.4 trillion is fundamentally wasted
every year,' he said."
