MAKE predicts we are collectively entering a new era of wearables. As the
price for enabling components drops, always-on connectivity in our

contra-rotating, cylindrical turbines for its propulsion, and by altering
the angle of the blades, it can launch vertically, hover perfectly still,
move in any direction, and thrust upwards and hence 'glue down' upon
landing, which it can easily do on the deck of a ship, or even a moving
vehicle. It's also almost silent, has the dynamic stability to enter
buildings, handles rough weather with ease, flies very long distances
very quickly and can lift very heavy loads. It accordingly holds immense
promise as a platform for personal flight, for military usage, search and
rescue, and much more."

A story at the NY Times explores [0]how the internet's involvement with
anonymity has evolved over the past two decades. Quoting: "Not too long
ago, theorists fretted that the Internet was a place where anonymity
thrived. Now, it seems, it is the place where anonymity dies. ... The
collective intelligence of the Internets two billion users, and the
digital fingerprints that so many users leave on Web sites, combine to
make it more and more likely that every embarrassing video, every
intimate photo, and every indelicate e-mail is attributed to its source,
whether that source wants it to be or not. This intelligence makes the
public sphere more public than ever before and sometimes forces personal
lives into public view. ... This erosion of anonymity is a product of
pervasive social media services, cheap cellphone cameras, free photo and
video Web hosts, and perhaps most important of all, a change in peoples
views about what ought to be public and what ought to be private."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes writes "Christopher Mims writes at MIT Technology
Review that Mika Mobile, developer of Battleheart, a big hit on both the
iOS and Android platforms, says that "a polished, high quality product is
more likely to be embraced on Android than on iOS because [1]the quality
bar on the android market is so pathetically low." Evidence to that
effect comes from the fact that "on iOS, user reviews for Battleheart
average 4.5 stars (4000 total ratings), which is quite good. On Android
it's a stunning 4.8, with 1000 ratings," writes the developer. "So not
only is it reviewed more highly, it's also reviewed more often, with a
huge percentage of android users taking the time to rate the app. I think
the lack of competition makes quality apps really stand out, and
generates a lot of enthusiasm from app-starved android users." Mika
Mobile adds that the most frustrating part about developing for android
is dealing with the deluge of support e-mail, most of which is related to
download and installation problems which have nothing to do with the app
itself, and everything to do with [2]the android OS and market having
innate technical problems. "Do some googling for [3]"can't download apps
from android market" or similar wording, and you'll see that this is a
widespread chronic issue for all devices and all OS versions," writes the
developer. "Based on the amount of e-mails I get every day, download
problems effect 1-2% of all buyers, or in more practical terms, somewhere
between two and three s**t-loads.""

Google made me swear that I won't uploading any "illegal" tracks, and
apparently people fear Apple's iCloud turning into a honeypot for the
RIAA. My music collection comprises about 90% "legal" tracks now--legal
meaning tracks that I paid for--but I still have some old MP3s kicking
around from the original Napster. Moreover, I have a lot of MP3s that I
downloaded because I was too lazy to rip the CD version that I own. I
wanted to find a tool to scan my music to identify files that may be
flagged as having been pirated by these cloud services; I thought such a
tool would be free and easy to find. After all, my intent is to search my
own computer for pirated music and to delete it--something that the RIAA
wants the government to force you to do. But endless re-phrasing on
Google leads to nothing but instructions for how to obtain pirated music.
Does such a tool exist or does the RIAA seriously expect me to sift
through 60 GB of music, remember which are pirated, and delete them by
hand?"

The Rocky River Police Department in Cuyahoga County, Ohio has started a
pilot program to help [0]find missing autistic children and senior
citizens with tracking bracelets. For a monthly fee citizens can get a
bracelet from the police department, who can then pinpoint the location
of their loved one or object of obsession. From the article: "If someone
wearing the bracelet goes missing, a family member or caregiver still
must alert the Rocky River Police Department. The person reporting the
incident or the police department then will contact EMFinders and give
the bracelet serial number worn by the missing person, [police chief]
Stillman said. While the police department follows its usual protocol for
a missing person, EMFinders will send out a signal to the bracelet. In
turn, the bracelet sends a signal to the 911 operator through the
Cuyahoga Emergency Communications System (CECOMS)."

Mozilla spelled out vulnerabilities it had patched in that edition and in

thread, Christian Legnitto, the Firefox release manager, put it most
succinctly on May 25: 'Firefox 5 will be the security update for Firefox

because the new rapid release of updates means many add-ons are not

chrb pointed out a story at BBC News about the discovery of [0]a
light-sensitive protein in the human eye that acts like a "compass" in a
magnetic field. The molecule at the center of the study is called
cryptochrome and is found in every animal on Earth. If removed from the
eyes of flies, the flies lost the ability to respond to a magnetic field.
From the article: "Despite much controversy, no conclusive evidence
exists that humans can sense the Earth's magnetic field, and the find may
revive interest in the idea. Although humans, like migratory birds, are
known to have cryptochrome in their eyes, the idea of human
magnetoreception has remained largely unexplored since pioneering
experiments by Robin Baker of the University of Manchester in the 1980s."
