coming from a single network of computers that computer security experts
continue to battle, according to new statistics from Symantec's
MessageLabs' division. The Rustock botnet has shrunk since April, when
about 2.5 million computers were infected with its malicious software
that sent about 43 billion spam e-mails per day. Much of it is
pharmaceutical spam."

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Gamasutra reports on comments from Electronic Arts VP David Demartini
indicating that the company thinks AAA game development budgets are
[0]not going to continue their skyward trend. "If [a developer] happens
to make a lot of money based on that budget, great for them. If they come
up short and have to cover some of it y'know, they'll be smarter the
next time they do it. That's kind of the approach that we take to it."
Certainly this has something to do with a few major economic flops in the
games industry lately, such as the cancellation of This Is Vegas after
[1]an estimated $50 million had been dumped into the project. Another
example is the anemic response to APB, an MMO with a budget rumored to be
[2]as high as $100 million. Poor sales and reviews caused developer
Realtime Worlds to [3]enter insolvency and [4]lay off a large portion of
the development team.

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Wired is running a feature about how a growing number of game developers
are abandoning jobs at major publishers and studios and [0]taking their
experience to the indie scene instead. Quoting: "Theyre veterans of the
triple-A game biz with decades of experience behind them. Theyve worked
for the biggest companies and had a hand in some of the industrys
biggest blockbusters. They could work on anything, but theyve found
creative fulfillment splitting off into a tiny crew and doing their own
thing. Theyre using everything theyve learned working on big-budget
epics and applying it to small, downloadable games. The good news for
gamers is that, as the industrys top talents depart the big studios and
go into business for themselves, players are being treated to a new class
of indie game. Theyre smaller and carry cheaper price tags, but theyre
produced by industry veterans instead of thrown together by B teams and
interns. Most importantly, unlike big-budget games that need to appeal to
the lowest common denominator to turn a profit, these indie gems reveal
the undiluted creative vision of their makers."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "In hospitals around the country, nurses connect
and disconnect interchangeable clear plastic tubing sticking out of
patients' bodies to deliver or extract medicine, nutrition, fluids, gases
or blood [1]sometimes with deadly consequences. Tubes intended to
inflate blood-pressure cuffs have been connected to intravenous lines
leading to deadly air embolisms., intravenous fluids have been connected
to tubes intended to deliver oxygen leading to suffocation, and in 2006 a
nurse at in Wisconsin mistakenly put a spinal anesthetic into a vein,
killing 16-year-old who was giving birth. 'Nurses should not have to work
in an environment where it is even possible to make that kind of
mistake,' says Nancy Pratt, a vocal advocate for changing the system.
Critics say the tubing problem, which has gone on for decades, is an
example of how the FDA fails to protect the public. 'FDA could fix this
tubing problem tomorrow, but because the agency is so worried about
making industry happy, people continue to die,' says Dr. Robert Smith."
This reminds me of the sort of problem that Michael Cohen addressed in a
slightly different medical context ([2]winning a MacArthur Foundation
grant) a few years ago.

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Slashdot regular [0]Bennett Haselton has written a piece on a new program
called Collage that can circumvent censorship by embedding messages in
user-generated content on sites like Flickr. The program demonstrates
that a long-standing theoretical concept can be reduced to practice but
Bennett wonders if anybody would actually need it, as long as they can
exchange encrypted messages over Gmail and AIM. He begins "In a
presentation delivered at USENIX, Georgia Tech grad student [1]Sam
Burnett and his colleagues described how their new program, "Collage,"
could circumvent Internet censorship by embedding messages in
user-generated content on sites like Flickr. The short version is that a
publisher uses the Collage system to break a message into pieces that are
small enough to embed into a photograph using standard [2]steganography,
the photos are published according to some protocol (e.g. "all photos in
the photostream of user xyz" or "all photos tagged with the 'xyz' tag"),
and receivers who know the protocol for identifying the photos, can
retrieve them and decode the message. According to the authors' [3]paper,
the system is general enough that it could be adapted to almost any site
where user-generated content is published. (All of this can be done by
hand using existing tools, but Collage automates the process to hide the
individual steps from the user.)"

RedEaredSlider writes "Researchers at the U.S. Army Medical Research
Institute of Infectious Diseases have found a class of drugs that could
provide [0]treatment for Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever. The new
drugs are called 'antisense' compounds, and they allow the immune system
to attack the viruses before they can do enough damage to kill the
patient. Travis Warren, research scientist at USAMRIID, said while the
work is still preliminary - the drugs have been tested only on primates
the results are so far promising. In the case of Ebola, five of eight
monkeys infected with the virus lived, and with Marburg, all survived.
The drugs were developed as part of a program to deal with possible
bioterrorist threats, in partnership with AVI Biopharma."
